The better question...is why didn't Admin warn board users that viruses were being distributed on the board by a rotten old geezer, via image links?
Why do you think think they they started routing image links through imgur?

Why disable image posting other than via imgur and then shut down image posting without using it now? Perhaps imgur is unable to now provide the protection it was previously thought to be able to.

If there was knowledge nefarious activity as described above indeed took place had occured...and no disclosure was forthcoming...and similar activity was likely to resume due to an exploit at imgur...well to allow it, with no disclosure would increase culpability, no?

Perhaps it should be addressed just WHY the switch was made by Admin to only route image links through imgur?

He wanted someone else to host the images so he can embezzle our subscription fees for personal use. Imgur realized some sites were freeloading and cut them off.
