Topic: I painted my brake calipers today

Anonymous A started this discussion 15 years ago #11,099

They look much better. I painted them while they were still on the car because taking them off would have been unnecessary and retarded.

I heard painting brake calipers red makes the breaks heat up 50% easier, painting them blue makes em cool down 50% faster and painting them green gives you 10% better handing.

I painted my front ones red, back ones green... feels good.

Mine were rusted to shit also. Just use some wire cup brush drill bits and you can get the calipers down to bare steel very easy. Spray on some engine degreaser, then wash that shit off and scrub the caliper. Spray a good 3 coats of paint and you're done! Cost about $10, definitely worth it. Just make sure you cover all the important shit.

Its pretty hard to fuck them up if you do the right prep work. Just take off your rotor and pads to avoid contamination. You dont have to remove the brake line, just hold the caliper up with some twine or a metal clothes-hanger. If you remove the brake line, you will have to bleed the brakes(which isn't really hard, just a PITA)
You start having problems if you use bright colors, they are much less forgiving.

Its still a sub-par job, if you are going to do it, take the extra hour or two and do it right. When the paint starts peeling, you will know why.

> I hope you don't die as a result of incorrectly reassembling your brakes.

In all honesty, if you are over the age of 16, and you can't put on a set of brakes, you shouldn't be driving in the first place.

> In all honesty, if you are over the age of 16, and you can't put on a set of brakes, you shouldn't be driving in the first place.

It's common sense stuff. Doesn't take a genius to see how something mechanical works, disassemble it with caution, and reassemble it in the correct order. It's why a mechanic can be trained on V6s and still be able to rebuild a straight 6. Or work on 15 different makes and hundreds of models. I will concede that some mechanisms are complicated enough you will need either training or a thorough manual, but brakes aren't one of those systems.

But I guess when the most complicated task you've ever undertaken is refueling something like the brakes is a god damned mystery.

I used to have a nice system. Couple of amps, couple of 12" subs, crossover and cap. was running... 500 watts at the time, I do believe. Might have been 350 actually... no I had a 250 and a 150. 400 watts I think. It was decent. I did the install with a buddy, didn't pay anyone shit to do shit. Looked good too, but I bought the box for the subs. no hand crafting :c

Nice. I paid Best Buy to install my shit and I'm glad I did. Shit kept shorting out and blowing my subs. I knew that if I installed it myself and accidentally fucked up, I wouldn't be able to get it fixed. Luckily I did that 'cause shit kept shorting out.

Also, 1/4. This is where my capacitor is now. Everything was behind the seat, but I wanted my amp to get more air. Also, the capacitor fit perfect in that spot.

My amp is great, but there's little room in my trunk for it to breathe. There's literally like 1-2 inches in between where my subs are in the trunk and where my amp is mounted. Moving it to behind my seat on that laptop fan I purchased. The next three pictures are the amp on the fan. I think it's a nice fit.

Hard to tell from this angle, but it's at an angle. It's nice so I can actually put the seat all the way back without damaging anything.

Here you can see the nice big fan that will help keep it cool. It's very quiet. I like it.

My amps would get really hot. They were mounted under the rear seats where there was space. Ended up riding around most of the time with the seats folded up so the amps could breath. Your install looks pretty clean. huge fucking cap, and the fan is a great idea.

Thanks. I usually kept my backseats down, but it's inconvenient putting them up and down all the time. Especially trying to put them down when I'm driving. Oh, and the subs slide a bit toward the front of the car, so I have to push them back to get the seats back in. The capacitor is about the size of a 2 liter bottle. I had a picture comparing them both side by side, but I forgot where it's at. And yeah, I was planning on getting a nice $50 fan, but I saw this for $15 and it's like the perfect size I need.

Anonymous Q replied with this 15 years ago, 2 minutes later, 3 days after the original post[^] [v] #202,410

You wouldn't be able to see unless you went with a clear lacquer, which would be kinda stupid. I wouldn't paint any text on the bonnet either, I had a friend who painted "Jesus is Love" on the back of his truck and it turned out really bad. But painting the headers and valve housing would look pretty sweet.

Yes.

He was racing, high on drugs, and lacked appropriate technique to manage braking and turning. He crashed into a house, totaled his car, is facing criminal charges, and severely disturbed the tenants of said house. Mr. to4str expects he will not have any punishment, but that’s just a deflection for the hard time he knows he’s facing.

I had them install my head unit months before my subs because I had a short and couldn't find it myself. Hours after I dropped it off they found it and my car was ready. I had them install this shit because I'm not willing to spend so much money only to fuck it up myself and have it a big paperweight. If I'm already spending that much on everything, I might as well pay the extra $50 or $100 for an install. Whichever it was. Either way, that's nothing to me compared to what I just spent.
