I’ve never been to NYC but my impression from TV and the news is that traffic isn’t exactly fast. There’s intersections every block and it’s congested. Doesn’t make a lot of sense that they were racing around the city while being chased by paparazzi

It's not that bad. I don't know how much you know about the geography of Manhattan, but it's an elongated island with the east-west axis being shorter than the north-south.
The north-south roads, typically called "avenues" (Madison Ave, Park Ave, 5th Ave, etc), are therefore longer and larger than the east-west streets. As far as traffic control goes, they are given more right-of-way time on the stop lights, so you can go ten or more blocks north or south without stopping. Obviously there can be congestion in some parts of the city, especially iconic spots like Times Square, but it's really not that bad in the vast majority of Manhattan. Exiting/entering the island can be congested, but once you're there, it's typically fine.

A lot of the city's traffic is controlled indirectly with the near complete lack of parking. The few parking lots you can find are very expensive. Unless you're wealthy, you don't own a car in Manhattan. So it all kind of works itself out.

Most people probably don't care one way or another. Some view them as minor celebrities, some people are obsessed with them, etc. It runs the gamut. Personally I wish they would just all shut up and go away.
