Not any different than the concept of an Abrahamic god.
There's no reason to think AI would ever unanimously decide to kill humans. We're not in competition for anything with them and might as well live on a different plane of existence.

The premise of this Basilisk thing never made much sense to me. What the fuck can random, ordinary people do to help this super AI come into existence? This vengeful AI would really get mad at, like, a third-world farmer for not helping it to exist? It just sounds a bit silly...

idk if this helps but as laid out it only applies to people who are aware of the situation, eg people who were exposed to the meme. @OP is retarded for spreading a dangerous cognitohazard on a public web forum

Yes, I know what it is. And I think it's dumb because someone like a third-world farmer who knew about it would, realistically, not have any ability to either help or hinder this hypothetical AI coming into existence.
This is just Pascal's Wager with an evil AI tbh. It's only scary if you don't stop and think about it for a little while. I find it pretty weird that some people have gotten really worked up about this.

Then OP is way behind the the times, because this thing has been doing the rounds for a long time, now.

your apparent non-chalance is probably just a ploy to convince the AI that you can't be blackmailed, thus disincentivizing it from blackmailing you

A nuclear bomb is terrifying. Roko's Basilisk is not. It is nothing more than an ill-conceived thought experiment based on faulty assumptions about how artificial intelligence works, along with a good dose of superstition.

You got it. I think the Basilisk will primarily attack by releasing everyone's Internet history. But if I show no fear, and just tell you all now that I'm addicted to shoe porn, it will have no power over me.

Just because you don't personally believe in Islam, doesn't mean other people don't.

I noticed many people here have suggested that Catherine should join a cult, and yet she shows signs of embracing a religion, she gets shit on for it. Do you think she should've joined a cult or do you think she should find a religion? To you, what is the difference between a 'cult' and a 'religion?'

Roko's Basilisk only works if you believe that punishing a simulation of you is the same as punishing you. As far as I'm concerned, even if the simulation thinks it is "the real me" (assuming the simulation CAN think and isn't just a P-zombie) and there's no way for either of us to prove it one way or the other, we're still distinct individuals. If the simulation gets punched in the face, it's not my nose that ends up broken.
