It's similar to if you repeat a word many times it starts to sound weird and lose its meaning. Same if you write a word many many times, it starts to look unfamiliar.

There is science behind it and a name for the effect but I don't remember off the top of my head. I'm sure you could find it pretty easily if you search around.
