And upon using the desktop feature, I have to say that I kind of like the interface that this particular Linux distro offers. It is as familiar as Windows and yet at the same time feels more intritive.
Is this what I've been missing by not switching to Linux? I kind of want to get a basic PC and use Linux for my daily operations outside of gaming or I might consider SteamOS for a proper gaming PC.

Yes. Desktop Linux has improved a lot over the past 10-15 years. Most hardware just works and doesn't require manually installing drivers or messing around with configuration settings (unlike how it used to be).
I think desktop Linux has become more appealing over the years not only because of that but also because Windows has become so much worse. I'm simply unwilling to use software written by people who act like they own my computer. I choose when to update and restart my computer. I choose what telemetry, if any is sent. So that pretty much rules out everything except Linux.
As for SteamOS, I haven't tried it. Wikipedia says it uses KDE, which is probably one of the best desktop environments for Linux. It's most similar to Windows 2000 - XP, which I think is a good thing. It's also highly customizable. The one down side is that it crashes and has random bugs come up. I wouldn't say it's enough to make it unusable though.
I personally use dwm instead of KDE. It's basically the most minimal example of a window manager that one can come up with (it's ~1000 lines of code) and is designed for easy modification of the source code. So there's really no limit to what you can do with it. I've modified it to work something like Windows 2000 (which wasn't as much work as you might think), borrowing a lot of the keyboard shortcuts and basic layout of task bar, while customizing it to be more visually minimal and giving it a custom dark theme with color accents.
tldr: yes you're missing out and you ought to switch. Also, if you put in the time and not only learn what all it has to offer (in terms of using the command line and making many things less tedious) but also customize it to your liking, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.
