FADE IN:
INT. RUNABOUT - IN FLIGHT
KEIKO is piloting the runabout while MILES sits in the passenger seat, checking over some tools.
KEIKO:
Miles, we're almost to the planet's surface. Are you ready?
MILES:
(nervous) As ready as I'll ever be.
The runabout shakes as it descends into the planet's atmosphere.
CUT TO:
INT. RUNABOUT - LATER
The runabout has crashed and KEIKO is badly injured. MILES is frantically trying to revive her.
MILES:
Keiko! Keiko, wake up!
KEIKO:
(weakly) Miles, I don't think I'm going to make it.
MILES:
(sobs) No, don't say that. We'll get you help.
KEIKO:
Miles, there's something I need to tell you. Dr. Bashir has been working on a new experimental procedure to upload a person's consciousness into a synthetic body. If I don't make it, I want you to agree to let him try it with me.
MILES:
(shocked) Keiko, I can't do that. You're my wife. I can't just let you become some kind of machine.
KEIKO:
(calmly) Miles, it's still me. My memories, my thoughts, everything that makes me who I am, will still be there. And if it works, I'll be able to live on in a new body, instead of dying here on this planet.
MILES:
(tearfully) I don't know, Keiko. It just seems so...unnatural.
KEIKO:
(softly) Please, Miles. Think about it.
CUT TO:
INT. INFIRMARY - LATER
MILES is pacing nervously outside the operating room while DR. BASHIR performs the procedure. O'BRIEN looks up as DR. BASHIR exits the room.
MILES:
Well? How did it go?
DR. BASHIR:
(smiling) It was a success. Keiko's consciousness has been successfully transferred to the synthetic body.
MILES looks through the window into the operating room, where KEIKO's new body is lying on the table.
MILES:
(emotional) Keiko...you're alive.
CUT TO:
INT. QUARTERS - LATER
KEIKO is sitting on the bed, still getting used to her new body. MILES enters, looking hesitant.
KEIKO:
(smiling) Miles, it's me.
MILES:
(still unsure) I know. It's just...different.
KEIKO:
(understandingly) I know it's a lot to take in. But Miles, I'm still the same person. The only thing that's changed is my body.
MILES:
(softening) You're right. I'm sorry, Keiko. It's just hard to wrap my head around.
KEIKO:
(smiling) I understand. But I'm alive, Miles. And that's all that matters.
CUT TO:
INT. QUARK'S - LATER
KEIKO and MILES are sitting at a table, drinking synthale. They are laughing and enjoying each other's company.
MILES:
(to Keiko) You know, I never thought I'd be having a drink with my wife in a synthetic body.
KEIKO:
(laughing) Neither did I. But here we are.
MILES:
(smiling) I'm just glad you're still here with me, Keiko.
KEIKO:
(touching his hand) I'll always be here with you, Miles. No matter what.
