Title: "Heart of Steel"
FADE IN:
EXT. USS ENTERPRISE - Approaching Betazed space
The Enterprise is on high alert, approaching Betazed space. Picard and the senior staff are in the conference room.
PICARD: "What's the status, Mr. Data?"
DATA: "The Romulan vessel is still in Betazed space, Captain. Their intentions are unclear, but the Betazoids are reporting dangerous levels of radiation emanating from the vessel."
PICARD: "We need to find out what they're doing there. Prepare a team to investigate."
The scene shifts to Data's quarters, where he is sitting on his bed, holding a small box. Guinan enters.
GUINAN: "Is everything alright, Data?"
DATA: "I am experiencing a feeling of sadness, Guinan. My cat, Spot, passed away."
GUINAN: "I'm sorry to hear that, Data. Losing a pet can be difficult."
DATA: "I am having difficulty understanding why I feel this way. Spot was just a machine, a collection of circuits and wires."
GUINAN: "But he was more than that to you, wasn't he? He was your companion, your friend."
DATA: "Yes, he was."
The scene shifts back to the bridge, where Picard and Lwaxana Troi are discussing the situation.
LWAXANA: "Jean-Luc, this is an outrage! How dare they violate Betazed space!"
PICARD: "I share your concern, Lwaxana. But we must proceed with caution. We don't know what the Romulans are up to."
LWAXANA: "I demand action! I demand justice!"
Picard takes a deep breath, trying to maintain his composure.
PICARD: "We will do everything we can to resolve this situation peacefully, Lwaxana. I promise you that."
The scene shifts back to Data's quarters, where he is still holding the box.
GUINAN: "Data, would you like to talk about Spot?"
DATA: "I am not sure that would be appropriate, Guinan."
GUINAN: "Why not?"
DATA: "Spot was just a machine. He did not have feelings, he did not experience the world in the same way I do."
GUINAN: "But you did experience the world together, didn't you? You went on adventures, you shared moments of joy and sadness."
DATA: "Yes, we did. I miss him."
GUINAN: "It's okay to miss him, Data. It's okay to grieve."
The scene shifts back to the bridge, where Picard is speaking to the Romulan vessel.
PICARD: "This is Captain Picard of the USS Enterprise. You are in violation of Betazed space. Please explain your presence here."
ROMULAN COMMANDER: "We are conducting research on a volatile metal that has become compromised. We mean no harm to the Betazoids or to your vessel."
PICARD: "I understand your concern, but we cannot allow you to continue your research here. Please leave Betazed space immediately."
The Romulan vessel begins to power up its engines, but suddenly, an explosion rocks the ship.
PICARD: "What was that?"
WORF: "Captain, the Romulan vessel has just exploded. The volatile metal must have reached critical mass."
Picard turns to Lwaxana.
PICARD: "I'm sorry, Lwaxana. We couldn't prevent this tragedy."
LWAXANA: "I understand, Jean-Luc. At least they won't be able to cause any more harm."
INT. ENTERPRISE - READY ROOM
Picard is sitting at his desk, reviewing data on the Romulan research vessel's incursion into Betazoid space. The door chimes.
PICARD: Come in.
Guinan enters.
GUINAN: Captain, may I have a word with you?
PICARD: Of course, Guinan. What's on your mind?
GUINAN: It's about Data.
PICARD: (concerned) What about him?
GUINAN: I think he's having a hard time dealing with the loss of his cat, Spot.
PICARD: (nods) Yes, I've noticed that he's been spending a lot of time alone in his quarters lately.
GUINAN: I think he needs someone to talk to about it.
PICARD: (understandingly) I see. Perhaps I should talk to him.
GUINAN: (shakes her head) No, Captain. I think it would be better if I talked to him. You have enough on your plate with the Romulan situation.
PICARD: (nods) Very well. Thank you, Guinan.
GUINAN: (smiles) Anytime, Captain.
She exits. Picard goes back to reviewing the data on the Romulan vessel.
INT. ENTERPRISE - DATA'S QUARTERS
Data is sitting on his bed, holding a picture of Spot. There's a knock at the door.
DATA: (clears throat) Come in.
Guinan enters.
GUINAN: (smiling warmly) Hello, Data.
DATA: (putting the picture away) Hello, Guinan. What can I do for you?
GUINAN: I heard about your loss, and I just wanted to see how you're doing.
DATA: (pause) I am experiencing a variety of emotions that are difficult to process.
GUINAN: (nods) That's understandable. Losing a loved one is never easy.
DATA: (nodding in agreement) Yes. I have never experienced this type of loss before. I find myself struggling to understand how to cope with it.
GUINAN: (smiling) Well, you know, there's no one right way to grieve. It's a very personal process.
DATA: (curious) How did you cope with loss, Guinan?
GUINAN: (smiling) Oh, I've had my fair share of losses, Data. But what helped me was talking to someone I trusted. Someone who would just listen, without judgment.
DATA: (nodding) I see. (pause) Thank you, Guinan. Your advice is greatly appreciated.
GUINAN: (smiling) Anytime, Data. (stands up) And if you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here for you.
DATA: (smiling) I will keep that in mind. Thank you.
Guinan exits. Data sits back down on his bed, looking at the picture of Spot.
INT. ENTERPRISE - MAIN BRIDGE
Picard is standing by the captain's chair, watching the viewscreen as they approach the Romulan research vessel. Lwaxana Troi enters, with a Betazoid diplomat.
LWAXANA: Captain! I demand to know what is going on here!
PICARD: (calmly) Lwaxana, please. This is a sensitive situation.
LWAXANA: (pouting) I don't care! I demand to know what's happening on my planet!
BETAZOID DIPLOMAT: (trying to calm Lwaxana) Please, Ms. Troi. Let us allow the Captain to do his job.
Picard nods, acknowledging the Lwaxana's point.
LWAXANA: You're damn right I am, Jean-Luc. And I won't let my people be put at risk by these Romulan invaders. I demand action!
PICARD: And action we shall take, Lwaxana. But first, we must ascertain the true nature of their research and the extent of the danger.
LWAXANA: (crossing her arms) Very well, but I'm watching you.
Picard nods and turns to the viewscreen.
PICARD: Hail the Romulan vessel.
The viewscreen flickers to life, revealing the interior of the Romulan research vessel.
PICARD: This is Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise. Identify yourself and state your purpose in Betazoid space.
ROMULAN CAPTAIN: I am Commander Vektor of the Romulan research vessel Tal Shiar. Our purpose is to study the unique metallurgical properties of this region's asteroids.
PICARD: I'm afraid that is not a sufficient explanation, Commander. Our scans indicate that your research has resulted in a dangerous contamination of the local environment.
VEKTOR: (skeptical) I assure you, Captain, our research is strictly scientific and poses no threat.
PICARD: (firmly) We cannot take that risk. You will cease all research immediately and submit to a full examination of your ship's systems.
VEKTOR: (reluctantly) Very well, Captain. But I must protest this violation of Romulan sovereignty.
PICARD: (resolutely) The safety of Betazoid space is our top priority. Picard out.
As the viewscreen goes dark, Worf turns to Picard.
WORF: Captain, we have received a transmission from Data.
PICARD: (concerned) What is it, Mr. Worf?
WORF: (grimly) It is about Spot.
Picard's expression softens as he realizes the magnitude of Data's loss.
PICARD: (gently) Understood, Mr. Worf. Inform Data that we will be there soon.
As the crew prepares to investigate the Romulan threat and console Data, they remain steadfast in their duty to protect Betazoid space and uphold the principles of the Federation.
With the situation on Betazed under control, the Enterprise crew take some time to decompress. Data seeks out Guinan in Ten Forward, hoping to better understand his experience of loss.
"Guinan, I must admit that I do not fully comprehend why the loss of Spot has affected me in this manner. I am an android, and I do not possess emotions in the way that humans do," Data explains.
Guinan listens patiently, a knowing smile on her face. "Data, just because you do not experience emotions in the same way as humans do not mean that you do not experience them at all. You have the ability to form attachments and feel a sense of loss when those attachments are broken."
Data nods thoughtfully. "I understand the logic of what you are saying, but it still feels...inconsistent. Perhaps it is because I have always prided myself on my ability to remain objective and detached."
"Those are important qualities to have, Data," Guinan assures him. "But they are not the only qualities that matter. Being able to connect with others, to feel compassion and empathy, those are just as important."
Data ponders this for a moment before speaking again. "I also find myself wondering if my attachment to Spot was simply a matter of routine. After all, I was responsible for his care and maintenance. It could be argued that my attachment to him was simply a result of familiarity and habit."
Guinan shakes her head. "I don't believe that's true, Data. I think you genuinely cared for Spot, and that his loss has affected you deeply."
Data considers her words for a moment before nodding. "Thank you, Guinan. Your insights have been helpful."
As they continue to talk, the rest of the crew enjoys some well-deserved downtime, grateful for a peaceful resolution to the crisis on Betazed.
FADE IN:
INT. ENTERPRISE - BRIDGE
The Enterprise crew watches on the viewscreen as the Romulan research vessel explodes, destroying the volatile metal and saving Betazed.
PICARD: Report, Mr. Data.
DATA: The Romulan vessel has been destroyed. The volatile metal has been neutralized.
PICARD: Excellent work, Data.
DATA: Thank you, Captain.
Picard turns to Lwaxana and Deanna.
PICARD: I want to extend my gratitude to you, Ambassador, and to you, Counselor, for your help in resolving this situation.
LWAXANA: It was my pleasure, Captain.
DEANNA: And mine as well.
PICARD: I must also apologize for any misunderstandings that may have occurred.
LWAXANA: Oh, Jean-Luc, I know how difficult it can be to deal with my people. You have nothing to apologize for.
PICARD: Nevertheless, I appreciate your understanding.
Lwaxana turns to Deanna.
LWAXANA: And as for you, my dear, I hope this incident has helped you see the importance of maintaining our traditions and customs.
DEANNA: (smiling) It has, Mother.
LWAXANA: Good. Then I can leave this ship knowing that I have done my duty.
Picard smiles as Lwaxana exits the bridge. He turns to Data.
PICARD: Mr. Data, I understand you have been dealing with a personal matter.
Data nods.
PICARD: I am sorry for your loss.
DATA: Thank you, Captain.
Picard nods to Guinan, who approaches Data.
GUINAN: (to Data) You know, Mr. Data, grief is a natural part of life. It's something that we all must face at some point.
DATA: But as an android, I do not experience emotions.
GUINAN: That may be true, but that doesn't mean you cannot understand the concept of loss. You had a connection with Spot, and that connection is now gone.
DATA: Yes, I suppose that is true.
GUINAN: Take some time to reflect on that connection, Mr. Data. It may help you come to terms with your loss.
Data nods, deep in thought. The camera slowly pans out as the Enterprise continues on its mission.

Aluhwahcksauna. God damn i was a nerd.
Are you just posting actual scripts now?
Is that what you're doing?
Wasn't he, like, simulating... killing a lot of aliens or did he simulate losing spot to try and feel bad for killing like 500 Romulus or something?
You know the death count on startrek has to be in the like , I mean, a lot. They blew people up constantly. I guess they did have data doing it a lot tho. And worf. He loved killing. He was constantly rolling his eyes and huffing because he knows he CAN'T just kill people. Sigh. You live this time, filthy human... you could just tell. Batleth to the face. He was wanting to pretty bad.

Yeah, klingons were mutually combative, they agreed to kill each other or die on the blade of another klingon. They weren't sneak thief Romulus, they were just, fuck it, let's die bitch, I'll kill you first fuck, let's go.

I know they Minda chilled with that later on, but, yeah, it's strongly part of the whole lore of the franchise. Greedy little zionists. Manipulating anything for latinum. Latinum! Ferengi jew gold.
