FADE IN:EXT. USS ENTERPRISE - SPACE
The USS Enterprise flies through space.
INT. ENTERPRISE - BRIDGE
Captain Picard is on the bridge with Worf, Data, and Beverly.
PICARD:
Mr. Worf, please report to the holodeck. You and Mr. Data have a training exercise scheduled.
WORF:
Yes, sir.
Worf exits the bridge and heads to the holodeck. He enters the western-themed holodeck program and sees Data's cat, Spot.
WORF:
What is this feline doing in here?
DATA:
Spot is here to help me practice my quick-draw technique.
Worf nods and unsheathes his Bat'leth. He begins practicing his moves.
Suddenly, Spot jumps in front of him, causing Worf to accidentally strike and kill the cat.
WORF:
(panicked) Oh no!
Data enters the room.
DATA:
What has happened?
WORF:
(lying) Spot ran out of the room before I could stop her. I am afraid she has gone missing.
DATA:
(distraught) This is most unfortunate. I must find her at once.
Worf begins to feel guilty for what he has done.
INT. QUARK'S BAR - LATER
Worf sits at a table in Quark's bar, drinking alone.
QUARK:
What's troubling you, Worf?
WORF:
I have done something terrible. I accidentally killed Data's cat.
QUARK:
Oh, that's not good. What are you going to do?
WORF:
I do not know. I cannot bear to tell him what has happened.
QUARK:
Well, you can't keep it a secret forever. It's better to come clean now and face the consequences.
WORF:
Perhaps you are right.
INT. ENTERPRISE - CORRIDOR
Worf enters Data's quarters.
WORF:
Data, there is something I must tell you.
DATA:
What is it, Worf?
WORF:
I am responsible for Spot's death. I accidentally struck her with my Bat'leth during training.
Data looks at Worf with a mix of anger and sadness.
DATA:
I see. Thank you for telling me the truth.
WORF:
I am sorry, Data. I know how much Spot meant to you.
DATA:
I appreciate your honesty. However, I cannot ignore the consequences of your actions. I must report this to Captain Picard.
WORF:
I understand.
INT. ENTERPRISE - READY ROOM
Captain Picard sits at his desk with Data and Worf standing in front of him.
PICARD:
Mr. Worf, what you have done is unfortunate. However, I believe you have learned a valuable lesson about responsibility and honesty. I am confident that you will take the necessary precautions to prevent this from happening again.
WORF:
Thank you, sir.
DATA:
May I request a moment of privacy with Spot's remains?
PICARD:
Of course, Mr. Data. Take all the time you need.
Data exits the ready room, carrying a small box. Worf and Picard watch him leave.
WORF:
Captain, I am sorry for any trouble I have caused.
PICARD:
I understand, Mr. Worf. Just remember to be honest and responsible in the future.
Worf nods and exits the ready room.
INT. ENTERPRISE - DATA'S QUARTERS
Data sits alone with the small box containing Spot's remains. He opens the box and looks at his beloved pet.
DATA:
Goodbye, my friend. You will be missed.
FADE OUT.
