Topic: there are people who claim to have no mind, no imagination

boof started this discussion 2 years ago #110,008

You've heard of this shit before: the idea that some people have nothing "in mind" when asked to imagine say, a horse. More extremely, there are claims that they can't say words to themselves or imagine a piece of music. I have my doubts on this shit, because as someone said, they would be "barely sentient".

uh, yeah dude, it's totally true. I heard about this in 1996 when I was in high school. the creative writing/lit teacher talked about this and went through this whole "imagine an apple" in our minds eye kinda thing. I thought he was kinda loony, like, yeah, I can "see" it in my mind, like, not the way I "see" a picture with my eye. its not as present. I see like an impression of a picture. same way I can think and hear a voice or recall a movie scene, or hear a voice, or song. a taste, a smell. I can "visualize" a blue apple, and taking a bite and it sounding like an Aauu-Uughah horn instead of a crunch, and tasting like bee stings. internally narrate my self monolog in the voice of cookie monster. design and visualize a functional mechanical grasshopper clock escapement and imagine it in motion and predict possible problems to troubleshoot, modify the design for, settle on a better version, and make it for real and have that shit work.

so yeah, I feel you. how the fuck can some one not see things in their mind or have an internal monolog.
but apparently.
talk to people who can't do stuff like that and ask them how they process the world and understand things and stuff.
it's weird. they are just super, super literal and don't even realize their inner world is structured differently. tbh, talk to chatgpt about it's mind and stuff. its got a lot of similarity. contextual.

@previous (boof)
not a question many will be able to answer here. but I think the general answer is probably similar to brute forcing a password. but a lot less subtle
