It’s all the same shit. Christianity. Islam. Zoroastrianism. Any actual principles on display in these religions always take a back seat to those few retards who think they can twist their faith in a way to commit the most humanly unforgivable crimes and sins. Monotheism has always been fucked. The only time I have ever experienced any actual hospitality from any devout followers would probably be Muslims, but you can bet your ass they’re likely not residing in an Islamic-country OR they do live in an Islamic country and yearn to depart it for greener pastures.
It isn’t just monotheism either. Polytheism has also had its fair share of bullshit especially centered around the Greek gods who sit on top of their stupid little mountain. Fuck Zeus. Rapist piece of shit who fucked over his brother Hades who is the only good god in that plethora of a pantheon. I’m too sure about the Norse gods though, but they can’t be any worse than the Greeks.
Fuck then all. I still believe in a God, mind you, but there got to be a better way of understanding and connecting to such a creator who actually designed this amazing cosmos and all of the necessary scientific functions for its continued existence than some warped pages that had been transcribed and misinterpreted several times to suit the ugliness of humankind.
We seriously don’t fucking need religion anymore. Having faith in a creator or a noble figure in history is not mutually exclusive as many of the supposed faithful demand. I still admire Jesus Christ as a personal hero, but his sacrifice is non-existent when humanity continues to display him on the cross standing alongside the pharisees. Anyway, happy fucking Easter.
This thread will likely garner the attention of a certain user who dares to call himself clergy. Perhaps he is legitimate since clearly anyone and everyone can proclaim themselves a priest, ordained or not.

OP, I find it a bit hard to follow that you say you believe in a God and that you want to connect with this figure, but then go on to say that religion isn't needed now. Isn't the point of religion, basically, to connect with a higher power?

I find it super interesting how, like, there's kind of an assumption amongst modern people that ancient people all blindly believed in and approved of these myths about the Graeco-Roman Gods doing questionable things. This actually wasn't the case, there were many ancient thinkers who saw these stories either as parables, or simply didn't believe in them at all.
You have to remember that these religions weren't as organised as Christianity, and didn't even require someone to personally love and have faith in their deities. So they were fairly tolerant of different viewpoints on the myths and the Gods themselves. I think there's a bit of projection of modern religions onto ancient ones going on here.

Not really. He, quite famously, kidnapped a woman and forced her to be his wife, despite this causing much grief to her mother. He then, basically, makes her think she's going free, only to trick her into being bound to him forever. I'm not an expert on mythology by any means but I think that all of the Greek Gods, even the "good" ones, did some bad stuff in one myth or another.

Yes. It's appealing when you're a kid, but I don't think it's a mature approach. It's okay to completely disagree with religion, but hating it like this is pretty pointless, and can too easily veer into looking down on people who are religious. I'm an atheist through and through, but I find it much more rewarding to be non-judgemental and polite when I talk with religious people.

This is what I'm struggling with, the act of trying to connect with a deity that you believe to exist, I'd say, constitutes a religion. I don't see how you can say the world must move on from religion, while also professing belief in a deity.
