Dante was the culprit for much of what Christians believe Hell to be like with his work Dante’s Inferno. So much so that people are unaware of where most Hell influences originate from thinking they were a part of their holy scripture and not from a work published centuries later. How did Dante manage this?

This. Incidentally I was in Florence a few months back and visited Dante's tiny church where he's said to have seen Beatrice for the first time.
