This doesn't work because no matter how he goes about it, he will know that he always has something to fall back on. The stress and psychological torture of truly not knowing when/if you'll get to eat again, truly not knowing if you'll have somewhere to sleep next month, truly not knowing if you'll be able to get to work tomorrow, truly not knowing if your children will be provided for, are immense. The troubles of the poor do not stem purely from the act of tight money management, but from the stress of the consequences, which can not be replicated by merely pretending you don't have money.

Even if he has no access to his funds, he will have his personal connections. Former employers, industry connections, family, friends, etc, who OP could fall back on for support if he absolutely needed to. Whether it's for a place to stay, help with bills, or help finding a job. As for the food stamp thing, it varies quite a bit from state to state (and of course country to country). In some states the income+asset requirement is so low that even if your food needs are completely taken care of, you're still struggling to meet all of your other needs. In some states, the amount you get is enough to certainly help take away a lot of the burden of food costs, but it is certainly not "eating well". Especially if you're unfortunate enough to live in a food desert, or in housing without adequate food prep abilities. Your fridge or stove break down and you can't afford to fix them? Your food costs just skyrocketed. That's all ignoring the burden of applying for benefits to begin with. If you can't afford phone/internet service, you can't apply online, and if the office is too far away but you don't have reliable transportation (public transport in the US is basically non-existent, maybe your car broke down and you can't afford to fix it, or you couldn't afford to buy one to begin with), then it becomes very difficult to apply. This is on top of benefits and the application process being purposely obfuscated and made more difficult than it needs to be, which is just an additional barrier for certain individuals.
