It's a protocol not a company, you dingus. That's like saying you don't want email selling your data. If you're not happy with the existing email providers, start your own server and talk to people only on your server. Just like IRC. Just like Matrix.

And direct messages are end to end encrypted anyway, so even a malicious server isn't going to know what you're saying in those circumstances. Try that with Discord. /rant
