Three 8 year old boys were murdered in Arkansas.
Three teenagers, a 16 year old, a 17 year old, and an 18 year old, were convicted and imprisoned of it. There wasn't any evidence linking them to the crime - no DNA, no clothing, or anything. There was this theory that the crime was a Satanic one, and since these kids wore black clothes and listened to Metallica, it was theorized they did it. And the jury convicted them.
Recently, there was DNA evidence found pointing away from them. So shit might be fixed.
That was 18 years ago. They're going to be let go now. However, they won't be exonerated. They have to plead guilty. Arkansas won't give them a new trial without looking bad, so they're making this deal where if the kids plead guilty, they'll be given time served or something, and set free.

Not to the Satanic ring level no, but I do think less liberal people tend to be, well, less liberal, and when those people are judges and juries and police, I do think it's more likely. Not sure if this is a really bad liberal bias or not, but it scares me how many crazed Christians and racists and homophobes get to make decisions like this.

Self-righteous moral hysteria tends to have that effect on people. Even so, that was moral panic in the late 80s. What's more shocking is that it still continues to exist even in the 21st century, but America has only overcome its racist hysteria (for the most part) what, 40, 50, 60 years ago?

What other options do you propose, Homestar? Incarcerating them keeps them contained to a certain degree, as they may or may not be a danger to other human beings. It's not like they are being whipped and waterboarded in prison. I think it's a like egregious that the guy on death row has stayed on it for so long and is only allowed 1 hour outside of his confinement, but that's pretty standard procedure.

There isn't a perfect system at all. There's a mild effort towards turning it from punishment to reformation. But some people can't be reformed. See John Wayne Gacy. But then you get people who are wrongly incarcerated.

I think society as a whole needs to have more compassion for those who have done wrong, and help them to live a decent life where they don't go down the paths they've gone down in the past.
America would save so much money if it didn't incarcerate people as much as they do, for as long as they do.
I agree that dangerous offenders should be jailed until they are no longer considered dangerous... but I also believe 99% of people can be helped towards not offending again...

Interesting and oddly sympathetic story about one of the teenagers convicted and his wife, who started writing him after seeing a documentary, and married while he was on death row.
