An animal is referred as “it” unless the relationship is personal (like a pet that has a name). Then it’s OK to use “he” or “she" when referring to the animal. I recently purchased some Roman coins from an antique fair! I spent some of my evening examining them, trying to identify which Emperors they show and what the inscriptions say. I got some absolute gems: a coin of Galerius (one of the last pagan Emperors before Christianity really took off, enthusiastically persecuted them but eventually stopped), a coin of Constantine the Great (the first Christian Emperor), and a coin of Philip II, which was quite heavily worn but somehow the dealer had identified it, and my own research confirmed this identification as accurate.
I know it sounds sad, but I have a blast! I'm not just holding a piece of history, but also a tiny piece of Roman PR, which can be dissected to find all kinds of interesting meanings
