I find the dynamic between The Beatles and The Beach Boys really fascinating. It's extremely interesting how The Beatles' album Rubber Soul influenced The Beach Boys' masterpiece Pet Sounds and how Pet Sounds influenced Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

I think Brian Wilson was a musical genius even more so than Paul McCartney or John Lennon. I think Brian really felt out-of-place among his fellow band members and that if he had band members on the same league as himself The Beach Boys would have been THE sound of sixties rather than The Beatles.

I have never been impressed by The Beatles. Their early stuff (like The Beach Boys early stuff) is cute, but their magnum opii are underwhelming. I like a few of their finger-picking songs such as Blackbird and Dear Prudence, but especially Julia, which is my favorite Beatles song.
The Beach Boys, for the most part, are excellent background music. I think their surf albums are wonderful and truly capture the zeitgeist. Pet Sounds is flawlessly beautiful. The instrumentation and harmonies are unrivalled. It truly belongs in the Western Canon.
