You're generalizing for the sake of generalizing. There are people doing well who are way too full of themselves and people doing poorly who have developed a self-defeating philosophy to ensure they continue on that path. No matter how you measure success or greatness, you will find people with all kinds of ego problems all along the spectrum.

Because people are praising your ability, it gives you the impression that you can do even better than what you're doing. Then when you go back over the thing you made and it's completely normal for you, it seems really average and shitty in comparison to the 'you' that you've decided you have to be in order to live up to the praise.

People who are motivated to better themselves may come off as having low self-esteem. I used to be perpetually amazed by my programming talents because of what others, with no programming experience, commented. I had to become stuck by a simple issue to find out how inexperienced I was. I eventually swallowed my pride and met with a professor at my school over the summer, and he explained to me somewhat bluntly what my current skill level was and the necessity to intimately understand what is going on in code, and not merely modify open source examples. I am now diligently learning the DirectX framework from the bottom up (I just recently learned how to write a program which creates a window and the functions within) and, with the knowledge that I am not especially talented or brilliant, able to motivate myself to do better. This article sums it up quite nicely.
So essentially, it takes a certain level of maturity to engage in critical analysis of your weaknesses and not just the mental masturbation process of oohing and awing at what your strong points are. That tends to be a blow to the self-esteem, but also helps you to remain humble and motivate yourself to do better.

Because few people can find a balance between stroking their egos and constantly putting themselves down. Most of the high-achievers I know are also constantly told they're not good enough, which I guess makes them strive to be better.
