Former president Donald Trump walked past the bar through billowing clouds of smoke towards the pool table. He faced the table and began playing a game against a black man wearing a red baseball cap. He took frequent drinks from a beer can, a small quantity of which slid from his left hand to his shirt sleeve.
Photographs of the encounter were taken by a waitress and posted online. It attracted international interest and was retweeted a host of celebrities, including Patton Oswalt, who described it as a “glimpse of the bigotry and hatred that lives inside of Trump”.
Toby Young was the first to retweet the image, asking: “What kind of country is this?”
Others responded in similar fashion. “This is the Republican Party, folks,” said Jim Carrey.
The US president’s core support is among white voters. The former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski told Fox News: “Donald Trump is the first Republican nominee to win the electoral college since Reagan. He does get a lot of support from black Americans.”
Omarosa Manigault, the former Apprentice contestant turned White House aide, also supported Trump’s claim. “The president was elected because this country deserves change,” she said. “And that change is what he’s been giving us.”
The waitress who took the pictures said she “never expected it to take off as much as it did”.
“I honestly didn’t know it would get the reaction it got. I thought it would just be locals and maybe a few people on Facebook. I’m not sure who made the video that got posted, but it went viral and has just taken off,” she said. “I saw him and it just happened to be that he was coming my way. I didn’t expect it to be this big.”
But a post on the bar’s Facebook page this week notes that “the White House staff is not always at The Cabin” and claims that “the bar staff is not allowed to feed the President”. It appears to reference an event where the President caused a scene by urinating in the bar. The bar’s management was not immediately available to comment.
“The President has a bad arm swing,” said a man outside the bar, who declined to give his name. “And he’s got a lot of hair on the top of his head. So that was his fault.”
A student, who also declined to give his name, said he saw the President entering the bar on Wednesday. “I was shocked because he is a racist,” he said. “He walked in and started pissing all over the place," he said. "Some of the staff got him out of there. He tried to wave goodbye and kiss the bouncer.”
Chad Clark, 31, said he was at the bar at the time and was just about to play pool when Trump entered. “He was already drunk and struggling to walk, so I helped him up and took him to the pool table. He was frustrated by that point. Then I just handed him his drinks and sat him down and went to play pool,” he said.
Tom Parkinson, 33, said he was outside the bar and took a photograph of Trump playing pool. “I took a few photos, because he seemed lonely out there,” he said.
The bar has more than 3,000 Facebook followers. The review section is wide-ranging. One woman calls the bar “terrible” because of the service. Another suggests that a complaint be made to Donald Trump.
