So... I left here a LONG time ago... decided to do something with myself that was a little more productive. I finished up my degree and ended up with an awesome job as an IT admin for the city I live in... and here you all are... the same old crowd... bawww'ing about how shitty your lives still are. i srsly burst out laughing.

Maybe you lucked out? However you are sure right about re how many do not move on- I get paid to play and use chats for stress relief in between tasks for work. Good thing I own my own business as many of my clients have IT depts with software looking for those who play while paid for other

That is an easy question to answer. My experience in the wiping out seemed to have nada to do with the boards I rented or borrowed. Everyone I tried "WORKED" It was my inexperience that caused the wipe outs. It was later I discovered and that was after talking to many I surf with - Its like skis Exactly like skis. Trade offs. Tail shapes vs length vs me thinks Body weight really enters that equation. So you know I am an Engineer rite? Its all Science/Physics.
Want to crank off sum turns? You learn if you step back to drop the fins - then those fins may work far more like brakes just when you doooooon't want that action. So there is no magic solution that works for me that will work for you. Borrowing someones board around here is as simple as offering the guy a cup of coffee and a donut for just one run. Trying a wide variation of Fins at first and I was clueless because early on I did not factor in the length or weight of me vs the board. Gravity & Buoyancy vs the Brakes (fins) Ur center of Mass is going to be different them mine!! Unless you weigh what I do. And just EXACTLY as in Skiing its how you make the most minor of changes on that board that have a HUGE effect on how well you do. Center of GRAVITY on Skis gets you exactly the same thing on a Surf board!!!
So IF I had it all do over again I wood have saved much tyme by only asking Surfers for the quick try of their board,,,, If they weighed about the same as me and for sure one mistrake I kept on making was borrowing a board from a high skilled surfer who often have the most minimum of fins for braking (so to speak)
I think I rented at about 1/2 dozen shops and then bought a used board which I still own and favor as its been repaired so often and everyone tells me that's no good re over all balance yet it still works so damn well for me. So sure I do use the three new boards and they only differ by length and of course the long board is in total different all around.
Ya learn to balance real fast or wipe out even faster. Get over confident and that's a good thing because you need to WIPE Out to test your limits of skill vs board action. For that first two years I still think the board was not at all important compared to me developing skill sets. Probably dumb of me cause I sure know better when it cums to downhill skis. With Skies its so easy to get a fast comparison but waves are nothing like mountain slopes in repeat ability.
Talk to the locals where you are going to surf and really just sum coffee goes a long way. People still argue like crazy about wax's but my skill level may never be good enough to judge wax. In cross country down hill I had the same exact problem. Here I only change brands of Wax on a Warm Ocean vs colder vs very cold ocean. Few agree with me but I still wax the bottom of my boards with a special formulation because I took extensive Physics classes in School and it just makes sense but I fully admit I cannot prove that tiny amount of friction difference makes much difference except in maybe bolstering my confidence to try tricks which I often end up wiping out in lol
