Topic: How come the PC feels like a battleground for consoles?
Anonymous A started this discussion 3 years ago#107,408
In the greater picture of the video game world there was always consoles vs. PC yet within the console side there was always arguments over which console should be it’s representative. Should it be Xbox? Should it be PlayStation? Don’t forget Nintendo! Yet now it seems the PC side is starting to get that way too. Do you have the game on Steam? No, it’s on Epic Games. I only have it on Windows 10/11. I have a DRM free copy through GOG. When did PC gaming go from being a platform to literally being broken up into sides?

When Valve figured out they could use the same locked-down approach that consoles use and bring it to the PC. When the public proved that they're willing to pay hundreds of dollars for a phone that remains permanently under Apple's control. When the public has shown time and time again that they aren't willing to give half a second of thought to the long term implications of what they're funding. It's a classic tale of humanity at large.

With choice comes preference. In the age of digital distribution, anyone can open up a storefront, and all will have their fans. Used to be your only option was physically buying the game on floppy or CD but now there are lots of digital stores that all behave like their own distinct ecosystem.

The concept of spending hundreds for a locked down phone is a so-called innovation of Apple. Google jumped on the bandwaggon after. Just like the distributors you mentioned jumped on after Valve.
