I recently watched a documentary about a cross-country trip in 1964. A group of a half dozen people took LSD and speed in a modded school-bus. This was before the hippy movement existed. None of the people in the documentary even had long hair.
They were stopped by the police several times and not once was the van searched, anyone put in cuffs or arrested. No drug dogs (no such thing in 1964!), no "PUT YOUR HANDS WERE I CAN SEE THEM", no anal cavity searches, etc. No mention or problem even with them sitting on the roof of the bus while it was driving through NYC and other roadways.
While there's a lot better about 2022 than 1964, it seems a lot has gotten far worse for no good reason.

From what I've seen (ie photos and videos) cops were more chill in some ways. They carried revolvers and didn't have body armor. They could also beat the shit out of you and kill you without HD video of the whole thing from ten different angles plus body cams.
I think the root cause is America was more libertarian in the past and more authoritarian now. It's not whether we have Democrats or Republicans in power, but sliding down to authoritarianism which creates a police state. The current fight is not so much whether we should have a police state, but who it should harass.

Did you know any that were older? Just over 10 years before, I suspect most cops were quite different. From what I understand, that was around the start of the transition from the Andy Griffith-style friendly small town cop, to the professional shitheads we have now.
Even in movies from that era, you can see cops still depicted in that way. Like a distraught mom, or dad coming in to literally yell at the police about not doing more to find their child. I can't imagine seeing something like that in a movie today.

Cops didn't force them. Prostitutes made their payoffs to the cops by swallowing a few loads to keep themselves on the streets and making money.

I get the impression that it hasn't been as great of a deterrent as one would've hoped since judges and DAs seem all too hesitant to punish or question the police. There's been way too many cases of police brutality and murder done directly in front of one or more people obviously filming the whole thing.
But I obv agree with what you're saying overall.
The real thing that this era didn't had going for it was the elephant in the room of race relations. But it seems we've (almost) entirely fixed that by treating everyone as if they're a black man in white-only neighborhood in 1950.

@1,205,790 (Meta !Sober//iZs) > America was more libertarian
That depends a lot on who you were and where you lived. Not sure a black guy in Mississippi would think that he had more liberty in 1950 than he does today, same with basically all women, etc.

You didn't go to prison for prostitution jesus you are as melodramatic as kook. Payoffs have been made on the streets since the 1920's prostitutes would always rather make their payoffs by mouth than with money. Prostitution is not a felony even today it is only a second class misdemeanor. They would only spend at the most 24 hours in jail.

Anyways here's the urban dictionary summary and the associated copypasta
Coconut Island is an analogy to the coercion that naturally takes place when there is a power imbalance. The analogy is a rebuttal to the idea of "voluntary interactions" under the framework of anarcho-capitalism. The analogy goes as follows. You are on a plane which crash lands onto an island. You are one of the two only survivors. While you were unconscious, the other survivor gathered all of the coconuts on the island (the only source of food) into a pile, sheltered that pile with all the wreckage of the plane, and declare they own it. And they say they are willing to give you some coconuts if you throat your cock. The question then presented is, "Is that a voluntary interaction?"
Let's say you're on a plane. That plane crashes and there are only a few survivals, in fact there are only two. You wake up after the other guy does, so he had enough time to collect and claim all the coconuts there were found in the island and he says he's willing to give you a set of coconuts, if you throat their cock. Now, I'm asking you, would you consider that as a voluntary source of interchange?

I went to a place called coconut island off the coast of Negril one time. But I'm sure there is more than one island named that.

So you think you need smarts to compare what his post is insinuating to a real life situation? Jesus you really are out of touch with life and reality.

The "America was more libertarian in the past" is not necessarily a perfect, universal, thing. I mean for most people, most of the time. Yes the 1950s was not the ideal time to be black in Mississippi. That doesn't mean it's a good thing the Podunk County Sheriff is militarized today.

Dude I am talking about real life here. Survival on the streets to make a living, not some made up shit like this. Come on and stay real here. We are talking about prostitutes trying to stay out of jail and keep working and making money at an illegal trade. This is real life here not some MC fantasy role play.

@1,205,833 (G)
But the analogy shows an inherently coercive action when there is not an equal balance of power. Ie, the prostitute only has to bribe the police officer because he wields power over her. If the power imbalance was equalized, or at least less uneven, the prostitute wouldn't have to blow the cop, but then could choose to blow the cop because they wanted to

@1,205,836 (G)
Yeah, in real life it's bad when cops get sex from prostitutes in exchange for favors because the police have the power in that exchange and it's unfair. I mean sure, from the prostitutes point of view it's probably better to blow the cop in order to have protection, but it's the domination of the police power structure that gives them that reasoning

And the pross has a choice too. You seem to forget this. She can let herself get arrested, spend the night in jail and pay the fine, but she chooses not to. This comes with the territory of making money illegally. They aren't handcuffed and forced to suck a dick. It is cheaper and easier to suck the dick so they do that. Nobody if forcing them, they choose this way to make a living. They know they have to make their payoff going into this business.

They are forcing women to have sex who haven't been convicted of a crime and yes they are sometimes are handcuffed and forced to have sex
You can Google and find many instances of that happening

How exactly does the fact they are white matter here?
There were obviously other problems in the 1960s, as mentioned earlier. The civil rights movement hadn't fully kicked off yet.
But I don't see the connection. Are you suggesting we needed to usher in a police state to not have racial segregation, among many other issues? Because that makes no sense.
