Anyone know how to do this for iphone 3GS? Was given an iphone but its network locked to the wrong network, when I try to feed itunes different firmware than the latest it says my phone is not eligible for this upgrade...

Go from there - I can tell you that what you do not want to do is download any file other then
iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
Its in total against my Consulting contracts to help anyone jail break anything but if you follow my short bit of advice You can solve your problem - its step by step so be sure what you find on Google has all the steps and there are many steps to follow EXACTLY.

Make sure you download the latest .ipsw for your phone to be able to browse to it.
No other versions work. Apple stopped authorizing them in a futile attempt to slow jailbreaking.

It's simple OP. To upgrade your iPhone you must trade it in for a droid.
You may have to root your phone to appreciate all the awesome features, but it's a hell of a lot easier than jailbreaking an iPhone.

Thanks I actually managed to restore to 4.3.5 and then use redsnow and a 4.1 ipsw to flash my baseband to the ipad one (stays on 4.3.5), it seems apple are still signing for 4.1 if you are on 4.3.5 with an ipad baseband because it wont boot so I managed to downgrade from there and untethered jailbreak... happy days.

I can get iPhone unlock codes for $200. Not worth it. My 3Gs is fully updated jailbroken and unlocked.
