Because the institution of marriage wasn't invented by Christians. It dates back to the Ancient Romans and likely even further. It was primarily used for political matters such as diplomacy. Though during this time period you likely didn't have a say in who you marry. This especially harms women of the time since they would only seen as commodities to own and trade away. Marriage was always more of a state driven institution than a religious one. Religion just said maybe you should make it about actually love and then they spat all over that concept as they started preaching out of their own assholes.
