Is this guy the UK equivalent of the US GOP's token black candidates just so they can say "see guys, we're totally not racist, we have a black friend"?

No, not at all. The UK's Conservative Party does not share whatever hangups the USA's Republican Party has about race. Political parties in the UK are actually fairly diverse. Our previous Chancellor was a black man, many positions in our Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet are filled by ethnic minorities. This kind of thing happening has been a possibility for a while now, IMO.

But for the record, I still think he's a rich, tax-dodging Tory who doesn't really care about regular people and will happily gouge our public services like his predecessors. Very tellingly, there's an interview with him from a few years back where he admits he doesn't have any working class friends.

He was elected, it just so happens that the people who elected him are well under 0.1% of our electorate.

Tbh I'm actually not really mad about the Tories getting to change leaders partway through their term. In our voting system we vote for a party, not a Prime Minister. While it's deeply unfortunate that the public chose the Tory party last election, that is what they chose.

Thanks for educating me. I'm glad UK politics doesn't have the same race issues as US politics. Admittedly I know very little about UK politics outside of the big stories that get picked up internationally. It just always seemed to me that the Tories were the closest UK equivalent to the GOP, so I projected typical GOP behavior onto them.

No worries! That's understandable. A comparison between the two does hold true in a lot of ways, I think, just not that particular way.

One thing I admire about the British is not so much the race thing (we also have brown people doing things in various levels of government in both parties) but the fact you people seem to be able to talk openly about class. In the US we have this weird religion of a classless meritocracy. Race is the only thing Americans can talk about.

The Tory members didn't elect him though, the MPs backed him and he got in the position without a contest. In fact the Tory members actively voted against him and would rather have had Truss, so you are completely wrong. He is not elected. He was appointed. He was only elected in his constituency, not as PM.

lol, mate, I was joking. I was not saying that some Tory MPs arguing amongst themselves is a real election, don't worry.

I'm curious what they would have done this time if it had gone to them again. Maybe we'd have Prime Minister Penny instead.

An inspiring story proving that in the UK, anyone, regardless of race, color, or creed can marry the daughter of a billionaire and become a Tory MP.

Rishi is actually doing OK so far. But after Truss, a donkey would've been an improvement.
