Rent rent Rent and try try and try and borrow friends b4 you buy. Sorta same advice re skis. Rent the latest and greatest and try. One size does not fit all.
Frankly I bought used boards the first 1.5 years b4 buy my first new and frankly have 2many nor do I think my best new is all that much more better then my best used. Around here at Cardiff by the Sea one does NOT see a lot of new boards very often. People talk about getting a new this or that but end up with what they got used too. Me and Skis - HAVE to have the hot new ones - and with Bindings always always the NEW Latest high tech best rated - Never fool with what could break a leg on failure.

Which one is the best, in your opinion, without the leash breaking? I've heard that numerous boards have this problem where the leash breaks... I do not want this to happen when I hit the ocean blue.

Anyone can look up types of boards on Google - Anyone can ask me what I use and I did answer OTHER then name the brand of new boards I have chosen to buy as my personal choice.
So Y do I not name the brand? Simple - Small shop which is one of many well known around HERE - It wood open the one phone line the owner has to harassment. He only has three employees and has become a friend who is over often for parties. His email would get spammed so its not like I cannot after all of my years on net spot them Trolls looking to cause grief LMAO
Nice try but no cigar. Last year I got a note from Qualcomm re some snail mail some wanker sent in re Me me ME - Later that week in a meeting at Q I brought that note up as a subject and we all had a huge laff. The intent of course was to make me look like a bad guy.

Its not like anything anyone says about me will be paid attention too when its a company in the biz of communications and in fact makes NOISE on purpose as the key to how CDMA works. LoL and you know I fully approve of what you did. Where did you pull that off? I created a new persona as well as being ultra extra careful with my text and strung MB along for a few weeks to pull out some necessary info. He knows I broke into his work computer and have lots on him, but hard core facts like SS# and credit scores do not provide all I wanted to know. He gave me exactly what I was looking for before I ended up exposed.

All right. I was looking at maybe going high end on a Plastic Fantastic Stinger surfboard but it's kind of expensive. What would be a good starter board to rent if I went to a shop? I'm not sure how tail shape and and fin act in controlling the waves with this model, but I don't want to wipe out too many times if I'm renting. What is a newbie supposed to do?

That is an easy question to answer. My experience in the wiping out seemed to have nada to do with the boards I rented or borrowed. Everyone I tried "WORKED" It was my inexperience that caused the wipe outs. It was later I discovered and that was after talking to many I surf with - Its like skis Exactly like skis. Trade offs. Tail shapes vs length vs me thinks Body weight really enters that equation. So you know I am an Engineer rite? Its all Science/Physics.
Want to crank off sum turns? You learn if you step back to drop the fins - then those fins may work far more like brakes just when you doooooon't want that action. So there is no magic solution that works for me that will work for you. Borrowing someones board around here is as simple as offering the guy a cup of coffee and a donut for just one run. Trying a wide variation of Fins at first and I was clueless because early on I did not factor in the length or weight of me vs the board. Gravity & Buoyancy vs the Brakes (fins) Ur center of Mass is going to be different them mine!! Unless you weigh what I do. And just EXACTLY as in Skiing its how you make the most minor of changes on that board that have a HUGE effect on how well you do. Center of GRAVITY on Skis gets you exactly the same thing on a Surf board!!!
So IF I had it all do over again I wood have saved much tyme by only asking Surfers for the quick try of their board,,,, If they weighed about the same as me and for sure one mistrake I kept on making was borrowing a board from a high skilled surfer who often have the most minimum of fins for braking (so to speak)
I think I rented at about 1/2 dozen shops and then bought a used board which I still own and favor as its been repaired so often and everyone tells me that's no good re over all balance yet it still works so damn well for me. So sure I do use the three new boards and they only differ by length and of course the long board is in total different all around.
Ya learn to balance real fast or wipe out even faster. Get over confident and that's a good thing because you need to WIPE Out to test your limits of skill vs board action. For that first two years I still think the board was not at all important compared to me developing skill sets. Probably dumb of me cause I sure know better when it cums to downhill skis. With Skies its so easy to get a fast comparison but waves are nothing like mountain slopes in repeat ability.
Talk to the locals where you are going to surf and really just sum coffee goes a long way. People still argue like crazy about wax's but my skill level may never be good enough to judge wax. In cross country down hill I had the same exact problem. Here I only change brands of Wax on a Warm Ocean vs colder vs very cold ocean. Few agree with me but I still wax the bottom of my boards with a special formulation because I took extensive Physics classes in School and it just makes sense but I fully admit I cannot prove that tiny amount of friction difference makes much difference except in maybe bolstering my confidence to try tricks which I often end up wiping out in lol

Just where/when/how/ Did eye ever say eye knew shit about Surf boards? I have areas of expertise in many things but NOT NOT NOT Surf boards. They still remain a mystery to Thee.
Much like Skis where I could do research and on occasions have - Its just a technical area I have no tyme or interest to bcum expert @
Life has so many choices and so little tyme. 2DAY eye get to spend more tyme at my Ocean a Blue
