I think Jesus has fallen victim to his own hype. Everyone's expectations of the second coming are so high, that nothing that Jesus could actually do would live up to those expectations. So, secretly, he's just put it on hold indefinitely.

I would count it as a sequel, but with a different director. A very different crowd was attracted, fans of the original one declared it to be non-canon, it got very controversial.
Stuff like Mormonism and the Jehovah people are the spin-offs, IMO.

Maybe a reboot. People want a direct sequel to the new testament though. What happened to Jesus when he went to heaven? What happens after the apocalypse. They left us on a cliffhanger in revelations.
