This 2003 film based on the novel of the same name by Louis Sachar is a faithful adaptation of the story about Camp Green Lake and the lives of the boys who are sentenced to dig holes in the hot sun all day. Along the way you learn about the history of the camp and the town which once was settled along the now dry lake basin. The story has a way of immersing the viewer into this world to a point where one feels relieved that they no longer has to endure the harsh environment that these boys are placed into and that's a good thing! The way the stories tie together near the end leads to a satisfying if not emotional ending.
The acting is superb and brilliant performances from Sigourney Weaver as "The Warden," John Voight as Mr. Sir, Tim Blake Nelson as Mr. Pendanski, and Patricia Arquette as "Kissing Kate Barlow" make this movie even more immersive. It should come as no surprise that this is a faithful adaption as the author of the novel himself wrote the screenplay.
I highly recommend checking this film out which is available to stream on Disney+.
