Topic: I thought Coke in the glass bottle was supposed to be made with cane sugar

I bought some today and it has gross ass high fructose corn syrup. Why did it cost like twice the price if it isn't even made with real sugar?! Fucking bait and switch bullshit. Admittedly I should have looked at the ingredients, but for as long as I can remember, glass coke = made in mexico = cane sugar. I am upset.

It was the Mexican coke that had cane sugar, regardless of container. I don't know if that's still the case nowadays. I used to like drinking the Jumex guava nectar, hecho en mexico, but I can't buy it anymore because they added sucralose to it to replace some of the sugar and it tastes awful now.

I recently had what was legitimate Mexican Coke, and it was pure cane sugar. Mexico uses sugar in everything, instead of HFCS, to support its sugar industry.

I just didn't think they sold "regular" coke in glass bottles in the states because I've never seen or heard of it before. I didn't even think to look for the "made in mexico" because I just assumed glass = mexican but now I know that is incorrect. Sad because I don't like the taste as much, and it leaves a weird film in my mouth that mexican coke doesn't. On top of that I paid mexican coke prices for it!

Do you know when they started doing this? I've tried googling it and can find literally zero references to any non-mexican glass bottle coke.

I've seen them in grocery stores a lot. Sometimes at Christmas as a special thing but also just for people who want to look retro or something I guess.
The Mexican ones I've seen for sale are larger (16.9oz) than the American ones (12oz) and usually in the Mexican/Hispanic food aisle, not the regular soda aisle.
I really don't understand why Mexicans are still doing the glass bottles for Coke (especially since all the other Mexican sodas seem to be in plastic). If you drop a plastic bottle or aluminum can on the floor it doesn't leave hundreds of razor-sharp shards everywhere.
I wouldn't be surprised if they kept the glass bottles going specifically for export to the American market and the actual Mexicans living in Mexico get plastic bottles like the rest of us.
> oh is that why they taste syrupy now?? do you like the kerns one
I don't know if it's like that thing where cilantro tastes like soap for some people, but I just cannot stand the taste of splenda. I don't even give a shit about the health aspects either way it just has the most obnoxious aftertaste for me.

Interesting, I don't buy soda often so I didn't even think to look there. And since you mention it, these bottles I bought are smaller than the typical glass soda bottle.

I always assumed (perhaps/likely incorrectly) that it was a marketing thing, a way for american consumers to easily differentiate between mexican and american coke. Then again other mexican sodas I've seen like Jarritos also come in glass bottles, so maybe it is just a mexico thing.

It’s because they still do bottle exchanges in Mexico. So people turn in old bottles get a few pesos and they clean and reuse them.

To clarify I don’t mean recycling in the US sense where it goes to some plant and is melted down. I mean they actually wash them put a new coke label on it, refill it and sell it.

For sure, I was exaggerating a smidge. But that is a big reason why I tend to avoid soda nowadays. That and a deep fear of developing kidney stones, which apparently is more common with soda drinkers. Once in a while is fine though. I used to drink it all the time, it's a wonder I never suffered any real negative effects from it.
