Some people just have a preference for one type over the other. Is this the case for you, or do you purchase solely for the utility each type of setup offers?
I have a strong preference for desktops, and only use a laptop when mobility is required. For home use I'm on a desktop, and all the computers at work are as well, thankfully. But when I travel I use a laptop (that I dislike.) But, my brother owns 3 laptops, and their home computer is a laptop, and his kids have netbooks. He hates desktops.
I use both type with no preference. I like them both equally.

really? I build my desktops because it saves me money, and I can configure the hardware however I like. You can build it in under an hour, actually it takes longer to unbox everything than it takes to actually screw it into the case. Sure it take a few hours to install the OS, but I'd rather do that then end up with the garbage store bought computers come with. Just a preference I guess, but it's definitely worth the time, IMHO.

yeah, and try to do any kind of serious upgrade, you can't even reuse the case. I'm considering buying a new case for vanity's sake, the current tall case I use I bought in 2002. Every time I've upgraded I reused the case, and cases cost around 80 bucks or more. Usually when I upgrade I spend 3-400 bucksish. I bought a new graphics card last year, this year it'll be a new motherboard and chip. Next year, probably wont even need jack shit. Maybe some more vanity stuff, like a solid state hard drive, but I doubt it. I'll be set for a few year's I'd imagine. Might need a new soundcard. My soundcard is 9 years old, but it still works perfectly and does 5.1 surround, so...
I dunno, I just like to do things like that myself. It's more fun. Not everyone likes messing with computers though.

I dunno why everyone's hating on laptops. Of course they're no way near powerful as a desktop, but how much power do you really need? I'm happy with my netbook at 2GHz. I still edit pictures and videos just fine.

I prefer desktops simply because they are more powerful, I can do more with them, and I like to build my own desktops, customize them, overclock them, upgrade them, etc. I still like laptops for the portability and versatility, especially netbooks and tablets. They each have their advantages, I'm just more of a desktop guy.
What I can't stand are people who get laptops because they think laptops are simply better than desktops, and then they sit the laptop on their desk and never move it. That's pointless.
