I slept in a hostel in London, so I'm sure it's different in America, but generally you get put in a room with a bunch of strangers and hope that none of them are serial murderers/rapists. Oh, and the room always smells like shit. I never had anything stolen, but then again I put my 3 valuable things in the tiny safe thing above my bed. I wouldn't bring a laptop there unless you have a private room.
