used to be, the only computers where huge mainframe style. if you wanted to use it remotely, you could use a keyboard and monitor but that was not a computer, it was called a terminal connected to the computer. everything you did was happening in some other building perhaps. you'd even have to go to some fuckin place to pick up printouts. the cocksucker system would often do something called crash, which meant you were at your terminal twiddling your balls for a while. people liked getting away from that bullshit as soon as they could.
