Topic: Why do Christians keep using this stupid argument?

Anonymous A started this discussion 15 years ago #10,617

> It's called faith. We BELEIVE. God and Jesus give us purpose, for they created us. If you wish not to believe, that is fine. But do not try to diminish the faith in others just because you do not believe. Christianity is the most popular religion in the world, so there must be some truth. God Bless You.

Seriously? This has got to be the most deluded argument in their repertoire short of the idea that some Jewish zombie carpenter flew into the sky to be with his space wizard dad who made everything in the universe.

Why do you care what other people believe? That's what makes religion turn to such shit, is that attitude right there.

I agree bud. Faith is the most ridiculous thing ever. I wonder how many Christians would let an airline pilot perform open heart surgery on them and then fly on a jet piloted by a doctor if the pilot and the doctor told them to have faith in them? Fuck faith and fuck the invisible man they call god.

Because fuckwads who get into power decide that things like invading Afghanistan and Iraq are what god would want. I don't want anyone to die for god. Because their beliefs make things like drugs and prostitution illegal. Because in some places you can't buy a fucking case of beer on a goddamn Sunday.

I don't. It's being force fed this line at any turn of a quasi-Christianity related discussion that arises that I'm involved in. It gets old.

exactly my point. Religion is such shit because followers judge others based on what they believe. I'm all for people believing whatever the fuck they want to. I don't believe in god, I think the idea of god is archaic and obsolete. But if I insist on judging people based on their belief in god, then I am no better than the christian judging me for my beliefs.

Nevermind the fact that 1 billion or so idiots believing something makes it any more true than what it is. How many people used to believe the world was flat? Argumentum ad populum is such a farcical excuse for believing in something. It's extremely nauseating.

I was with you to here. Don't let yourself be sucked into the idea that you are no better than someone because you think you do the same as them. If I believe that mutilating hookers is a good idea and you work in a slaughter house, doing piece work (separating the cuts of meat) then, by what you are saying, one could argue that you should not judge me because I do the same thing to living things as you do. But that argument is just silly, unless you are a hardcore PETA type.

Well, but it's faith, and faith implies nothing but faith. Faith is faith. You either have it, or you don't. Most Christians are aware of the questions, and the problems, and everything. They try and explain things in a way that makes sense, but logic soon picks it apart. What logic cannot do it pick apart faith. Faith is the first, and last thing religious folks jump to. It's just faith, bud. I'm sure you understand what that word means?

It means that you believe. It means that you believe, and that nothing can make you not. Faith is the crux of religion, and they fight like the devil to hold on to something, anything, that keeps their faith intact. Even if that means holding onto empty justifications.

Truth. But, faith in God is one of the things that prevents people from doing things like mutilating hookers. For all of religions evils, there is much good that goes along with it. Faith emboldened morality is not necessarily bad, but I won't argue that the extremes are part of what is good. Personally, I have no problem with people believing in god, heaven, etc. I have a problem with them trying to force it on me in any way, especially politically. But if they want to pray to a man in the stars, more power to em.

Agreed, and I think it's arrogant of people to take conjecture as truth. I tend to not argue with people about religion, though, because it's damn near impossible to convince someone that something they have believed for their whole life could be wrong, even if your logic is flawless.

Anonymous B, I know and it's obvious. Their ability to have faith in it isn't what's in question. It's not their ability to hold to their arguments, it's WHY they do it (being that so many people say it as well, so therefore it must be true!). I just find that same old song and dance number to be extremely tiresome.

Also for the record, I'm not arguing whether Christianity is true or not (SO FUCK OFF MOUNTAINMAN I AM NOT BAITING YOUR NONSENSE IN THIS THREAD OKAY?) but I just wanted to say that it's fucking irritating when people defend themselves for a point saying that "SO MANY PEOPLE THINK THIS TRUE HOW SO WHY ARE THOSE WHO DISAGREE WRONG?"

You could make the argument for any other subject but I encounter this situation the most in Christian discussions. Sorry that your fellow believers do this, mountainman, but it happens. Deal with it. I'm not trying to persecute you or your beliefs but I'm persecuting stupid logic.

Ok, bud. I'll answer your question for a third time, that particular statement (everyone believes it, so it must be true!) is used as a last ditch justification to hold onto faith even in the face of a total failure of logic and reasoning. If they say, "well, you're right. I don't have anything to hold onto," then their faith will collapse, and they will lose their belief.

Instead, they make a crazy statement, smile, and deliriously go on about believing in their fairy tales. So there you go, they make that statement because it's the only thing they have to hold onto, "everyone can't be wrong. So I'm right!"

I will also say that this is my opinion, take it or leave it. But I'm kinda done repeating myself for you, to4str bud.

I guess, but it's an argument that you cannot win. They'll always go to some statement similar to this. It's annoying, sure. But if you've backed them into that corner then you've won the rational argument. You will, however, never win the irrational argument. They have faith in their corner, and faith is the definition of irrationality.

Just take your rational win and be happy with it.
They will be happy with their irrational victory.

My biggest concerns aren't in converting, but in preventing. I have no interest in "spreading the word," I just don't want them to spread theirs politically. I'm not accusing you of trying to convert people, but I see so much futility and frustration when arguing with the religious crowd that I find it best to smile, say, "that's nice," and then try and not vote republican. I agree, despite the fact that logic may be as faulty as blind faith. But faith does pick up where logic leaves off. Faith really is an incredibly illogical idea, but it's also one that is extremely powerful. More powerful than logic, to be honest. That's probably why more people believe in some form of god, then those that do not.

also, inb4 christfags say faith is perfectly logical. I will not argue the point

Many religions have become "ethnic" i.e. people consider themselves members of a religious group by virtue of the country/state/town they were born in, the language they speak; or "cultural" i.e. people consider themselves members of a religious group by the rituals they practice, or food, behavior etc. they avoid - not because they believe in the God of that religion.

This affects all the major religions to an unknown extent.
