2 years maybe, daily use. Lots of high-end gaming. But that was just the motherboard and CPU and whatnot. Some stuff is older, much of it's newer. But usually I do major upgrades every 1.5 to 2 years and spot upgrade as I need to.
Are you talking store bought ready-to-go computers or laptops? I've seen some "decent" store bought computers get fucked up in as little as 2 years. They received heavy use from the users, but they abused the fuck out of them (malware, constant bullshit.) You can probably make it run well for 5 years as long as you don't do things to fuck it up, or if you do, know how to reinstall <.<
I've made a dual-core 1.8ghz run XP for something like 3 years and it's in good shape, but was just for school. Moderate use, light net, but heavy on the wear and tear. Busted up the hinges something fierce, had to fix that. The case looks like shit, and it's too slow to do much of anything but host up media to my TV. ^^

6 years. It was a Dell Optiplex GX1 with a Pentium II, and a 5gig HDD.
I hated that slow ass computer so much that now I miss it terribly, I guess its just nostalgia.
I even had an old 13 inch CRT monitor that wouldn't show any colors beyond red, blue and green. If you wanted to see yellow or purple, you were shit out of luck

My ASUS G73Jh-A2 has lasted me about a year and a half so far, and it's totally sufficient for everything.

I have 2 Compaq desktops from 04 with single core Sempron CPUs, 1 gig DDR each (originally had 256mb) and 160 gb hdd.
They both have only Office XP, MS Money 05, Google Chrome, Flash Player, Foxit PDF reader, ccleaner, defraggler and Norton 2011.
Both PCs have 2 minute start up times and never had any problems.

I've had three computers:
-Dell desktop: mediocre. Broke, like, three times due to manufacturing errors. Got a newer, "better" computer every time free of charge. Still broke on me, though.
-Toshiba laptop: absolutely fucking shit. Will spread horrible reviews around the internet about it just for revenge.
-Macbook pro: Amazing. No problems yet.
I wish I could say that I hate my Mac and that I loved my Toshiba, just so that the elitists don't win, but I really cannot. Mac IS superior. Sorry.

Acer netbook: Broke, like, 10 times while I was learning to computer. Is now in its fianl resting place of the cabinet above my closet.
Toshiba, forgot model number: I got it in shit condition, the touchpad and the keyboard were broken, I had to use an external for both, and the keyboard I had to use externally was shit, and it just generally sucked. But GNOME3 was nice.
Toshiba Satellite: Really nice.

I have a HP pavilion dv7 laptop that I've had for a little over a year. It's decent, and it has an alright GPU (has a little trouble with PS2 ROMS), but it has an amazing soundcard. I souped it up a little bit with an extra 2GB of RAM and a 750 GB HD instead of the stock 500. I use my desktop more, though. It's an old ass IBM thinkcentre with a pentium 4 and a terrible graphics card. I put a 500 GB HD in it and it runs windows 7 just fine, but for work shit, it's nice to have the huge monitor. It also has a nice soundcard, and right now it's hooked up to my stereo. It's still shit for watching movies because the GPU sucks, but it's great for music.
