Okay, I have ubuntu 9.04 (yeah, old but I shoved in some new packages and it's kinda nice now).
Initially, the sound worked fine, through headphones and through the laptop speakers.
Well now, I cannot hear anything by applications or the system itself, however, when I turn up mic volume, I can hear what the mic records. Strange.
Anyone know the source of these audio woes?

This. I came to linux fleeing Windows while fleeing OS X while fleeing... etc. Plan 9 sounds nice this time of year.

Hence why I stick to Windows, I don't need the power user features linux offers, especially at the cost of many good programs and games, Windows has its downsides, but not as much as other OS's in my experience. Your problem is 99% likely driver related, good luck with hours of frustration tracking it down and fixing it.

I had a strange problem like this too. Everything my mic heard went straight through out my speakers. I don't know the solution. But trying changing/messing with sound settings. I eventually got it back to normal that way. But I use 10.10.

The only desktop OS choices worth using are OS X and Windows 7. Maybe Linux will catch up one day.

Maybe you borked something along the way. It's hard to say without knowing more about the sound hardware and seeing some system output.
Here's a general guide to sound issues. (Yes, it's for Karmic, but it should be relevant to upgrade issues that may apply to you if the problem started after updating in Jaunty. If you're not using OSS, make sure that gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio is installed or try removing it and reinstalling it.
Also, don't mind eels. He was traumatized by being forced to install an early Gentoo distribution as a young boy and has never recovered.
