Matt failed his attempt to get into Grad School and knows or at least I think he knows he has no chance to get into a PhD program at any school that contacts the place he got his MA from. He really is an outcast. So loaded with student debt and a dad who has been in court for years trying to keep himself out of Fed prison - He got a job in Beijing - Fired from that and then a new teaching gig - English of all things after 15 years of French. $10.47 an hour but wayyy less then 40 hours of paid work.
There are 3 credit reporting agencies. He ends up with a number that is as low as they give with negative footnotes. So he is on the run and in hiding from those who go out and collect. One good reason he pulls the Masked bit - He cannot even use his real name to publish as a result.
