Topic: Ask a Christian anything!

TrollBuster3000 started this discussion 15 years ago #10,539

Ask me anything about Christianity. If there's anything you wanted to know about the gospel, the various denominations, particular doctrines or dogma, or even current church culture, ask me!

What do you think is the strongest argument against the existence of God (problem of evil, logical incompatibility of omniscience/omnipotence/omnibenevolence, etc.) and what is your response to it? You don't have to go into extreme detail in your rebuttal.

@187,653 (Fake anon !ZkUt8arUCU)
Hmm.. my answer would be the lack of any actual evidence. I can't reconcile that with a belief in the supernatural.

As far as evil, god did not create evil. Evil is the absence of god, according to Christians. Not really an answer, but it's what they will say. You can't really reconcile an omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent god who is also omnibenevolent. A god who truly cared with undying love for a people could not create a world that is suffering. He would not, for a lark, allow Satan reign over the earth. He wouldn't have created Satan. Angels do not possess free will. That whole story makes no sense. Also, ant angel would know that to take on god would be futile. It's the most ridiculous aspect of Christianity.

Mormons (especially in the USA, and in politics) have lately been trying to portray themselves as part of mainstream Christianity. Unfortunately, this is not true.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HSlbuli7HM&feature=related

This is a hilarious cartoon illustrating Mormon doctrine. I cannot, however, confirm its veracity (despite owning all the key Mormon religious texts I have never read them). Note that Mormons have changed many of their original doctrines in response to religious discrimination by the US government, and lately, social pressure. They no longer teach many of these doctrines (in itself a powerful argument against Mormonism).

The last study I saw was about pedophilia in the Roman Catholic Church, which stated that the rate of sexual abuse was comparable to that of the rest of society (though this, to me at least, is a damning indictment - the rate should be much lower than the rest of society).

The Bible is not a rulebook. Jesus gave us two laws - Love God and love people. Most people believe Child Sex Abuse (CSA) constitutes a violation of "loving people".

Yes. He demanded far greater faith from gentile "dogs" though.

Have you read anything on the possible influence of psychedelic mushrooms in early christianity? I've not read anything myself, but ive heard Joe Rogan talk at length about it, and he had a guy who wrote several books on the subject on his podcast (he seemed like a bit of an obsessive nut, but a lot of the things he said made me want to read further.

@188,388 (TrollBuster3000)
I believe I was taught this in school. We were given free will because god loved us the most among all his creations.

Could be BS. I wouldn't take satans supposed betrayal as free will. I mean, there are "bad" angels. My knowledge of angels is seriously lacking, but likely that's the scriptures fault not mine. It's hard to really gather what exactly angels are and what purpose they were made for. They are used as messengers and warriors, assassins, and protectors.

A lot of scripture passages supposedly about angels seem very muddled to me. Poor translations (or just poor writing like most of the bible) could be the culprit; I just feel like angels make little sense.

Im no biblical scholar though, I've read most the bible (I've never read a lot of the old testament), but really y knowledge comes mostly from reading shit online. Obviously, most my sources are skeptics, too.

Enlighten me if you can, though.

He did not "demand" greater faith. He praised and appreciated their great faith. Salvation is for all humanity; not just the Jews.

As you said, I have not heard anything on the subject apart from obsessive nuts. I recently read about the word authentein and came across an article ascribing a sexual meaning to the word in a similarly "obsessive nutjob" way. Every instance of the word EVER is now radically redefined with this new meaning. Very unconvincing.

You should not repeat claims because you "were taught this at school". You say that that your lack of knowledge is the scripture's fault; not yours: when was the last time you studied the scriptures regarding the nature of angels? I would suggest that you never have, and that your deficit of knowledge in this area can only be ascribed to your own lack of diligence.

I do not dispute that many translation are not literal (i.e. they translate concepts, not the words. An example is the Jesus is called the Lamb of God in the Bible. In some Inuit/Eskimo translation He is called the "Seal of God" as the seal somewhat takes the place of the sheep in these cultures. This can be worrying when a small group of people decide what the essential cultural aspect of a symbol is etc.) however I dispute that they are poor in that they do not read well in English.

Most of the Bible is not poorly written. It is a wonderful work of historical literature apart from any religious significance.

The Bible speaks little on Angels as a class of spiritual beings. The Bible is predominately a history of the Jewish people, poetry, the Good News of Jesus Christ, and epistles to early Christian communities. In the interaction of God and men, angels play only a minor role. Paul speaks against the undue focus on angels in the early church.

I don't know if that is a common belief. Most Mormons seem content with the idea that everything about history and scripture hasn't been revealed and that there are many things we aren't aware of. This leads to an attitude that is generally pretty comfortable with modern evolutionary theory -‬- even if some feel that evolution must have been "guided" to result in humanity.

I suppose your argument could be used against "to catch a predator" or prostitute-style entrapment. It doesn't matter if a person 'thought' they were about to engage in pedophilia or prostitution - they really weren't; no crime committed.

All the 1st responders that died 'acted contrary to God's pleasing'

You do see my point. Many of them were kind and loving people and what good did that do for them? Get them in2 sum sort of Heaven sooner?

My point is what is the point of prayer if it does NOT change anything. The Bible tells that story about God being unpleasing re asking Noah to build the Ark so God could destroy what man had built up 2 that point.

As I C's it Bien Laden prayed to the same God so that the planes wood do as planned.

Muslims do believe in the same God you do. Of course as you know there are Right Wing and Left Wing n in the Christians just as there are the variations of extremes in Muslims.

I attend a pentecostal church because I believe (in Australia, at least) that their services are most culturally relevant i.e. lack of ritual. I do not agree with all the doctrine and dogma of my denomination, but recognize the preeminence of practical action before ideological purity.

Pentecostal churches Rock here in USA re holly rollers in aisles as well as serious fun Rock n Roll Choir's - Love those Tent revivals and I do go for the music and always nice people. Not one ever tried to convert me other then to offer up some soul food after given many are black run operations yet the White ones are still fun.

When I lived in Australia I only attended Catholic Churches but did hire a local Aboriginal priest to perform a special cerebration at the Global Satellite Tracking n Command/Control station in Dubbo NSW - Catholic Priest in town helped me locate just the right one

It could be argued that they were not serious muslims. Why else would they commit such atrocities? That they went to strip shows and drank alcohol in contravention of Islamic law further proves this.

I think they were as serious in terms of true believers as say the Christian Klu Klux Klan were/are.

A lot of white racists in Montana and states close by call them selves Christians.

Your Church is more middle of the road except many wood point out the speaking in tongues is a little over the top, yet I know that exists in the bible if I remember correctly.

I see no harm in it.

My whole original point in using the Muslim prayer to God was only to highlight that I doubt prayer has a place because with millions and millions of people all praying at the very same tyme for the very same thing during the TV coverage of the first plane vs the 2nd plane flying into building #2 - Its a rare tyme when one can document millions doing a prayer all at the same tyme.

Earthquakes are another example or even Tornadoes. You have all those in Churches and they are there for God and then the Church is blown to hell and gone in seconds. I doubt all those people were "act"(ing) "contrary to God's pleasing"

In other words when I ask you as a Christian to explain the Y God does this and someone like you may reply its a Free Will thing God set up at the Get Go - If so then if its Free Will God gave Humans what wood the point be of prayer?

Demonstrate this. God watches the ones he "loves" suffer.

Demonstrate his love. He could have given us knowledge. If Jesus existed he could have saved so many lives by just teaching people good hygiene. He didn't. He could have lowered the infant and mother mortality rates for pregnancy by an amazing amount by simply teaching people to wash their hands.

There is nothing that demonstrates god is loving or possessive of knowledge we humans don't have (didnt introduce ANY new ideas to humanity).

That isn't an answer. That's what god tells you. Demonstrate how he loves. He can't.

If Jesus was sent to help, why didn't he introduce anything new? Why didn't he teach basic hygiene? Even if just by example? Why didnt he introduce any new concepts in terms of humanity?

How did Jesus help? How did his dying for my sins do anything? It doesnt make any sense.

You can't demonstrate god's love. The only way to show his love is by saying how he sent his son to tell people to love him and say a bunch of shit people already knew.

Come on. Give yourself more credit at least.

Same for child abuse. A real God wood protect Children and not make it easy for what happens.

Good fiction but what the hell happened to all the other Legit Gods of Rome and Greece and Indian Gods of South America and USA area and all those Gods drawn on Walls and Cosmos.

The saints are where you get into polytheistic worship, but they call them
