not really. it isn't a lot when you compare to number of gun murders committed using handguns. handguns aren't scary to talk about on the evening news, though

Also the easiest to get ahold of gun is the shotgun, and they are rarely used in mass shootings and not very frequently in gun crimes

I'd like to see that data, it seems like the majority of gun deaths are from handguns, and only 3% are reported with rifles, but also 36% is not stated. And this is stuff from 2020 pew research data sourcing fbi stats? Idk take that what you will.
But I'd be surprised if literally only 1000 people have died since 1776 to rifle fire.

Are they more regulated than other types of guns?

People do not have automatic weapons. They have semi-automatic. That is not an "assault rifle". It is no different than a hunting rifle with the same caliber of ammunition.

It seems like all the fuss should be about handguns then I guess. And afaik none of the suggested laws incorporate taking guns away from people without any justification right?
@1,184,043 (Kook !!rcSrAtaAC)
The pew research site indicated that the rifle category included what's commonly referred to as assault type weapons
@1,184,046 (A)
Unfortunately most semiautomatic weapons can be manipulated to be "fully" auto, or at least ad a recoil based "auto" trigger action

So then, take a moment and consider why someone might be making a hullabaloo over 'assault rifles' and not handguns, or knives, or automatic assault pickup trucks... there must be some reason 🤔

I don't think they are or have ever stated they are?
@previous (E)
Assault sounds visceral so that's probably the reasoning. Lobbyists on both sides I'm sure use such language to get extremists on either side of politics to be the loudest voices.
Did we forget that I mainly disagree with the statement of 1000 deaths from rifles since our country's inception?
I know the hype against hurr durr assault rifles is probably to make people buy guns cause they're afraid they're being taken away or to make people buy guns so they can keep themselves safe from criminals with guns

Ok I disagree with that statistic and would like the citation. I would happily change my mind on that, I'm not trying to die on a hill or anything, but give me something.
I already said I believe that it's hype, the research I cited also said that only 3%of murders were committed by rifles [which also clarifies that it covers the guns called assault rifles] so I can't and am literally not arguing that they constitute most murder.

well when some kid is playing tactical kill hero with his toy with molded parts on it to make look all "tacticool" and kills lots of people in a short space of time, sometimes it gets the attention

what if one of these shooters uses like some kind of period specific weaponry someday. would be an interesting statement. 'look what I can do with a lever gun'
