Hi,
I guess this question is super general, but I'm hoping to get some advice as to how many months in advance a person should typically start looking for an apartment.
I'd want one in April. Should I start looking now, or should I start in, like, March, or something?
I googled it and didn't really find anything conclusive. (Maybe for a good reason, lolzzz)

It's never too early really, but 3-4 months in advance sounds about right, renting a house can offer some nice advantages. Shop around, explore all possibilities.

Start as early as possible so you know where you want, what you want, and how tough it is to find it. Many landlords and management companies are ridiculous about time frames and only want applicants who can fill immediate vacancies. You’ll only be able to have success with applications in late March, but information is power.
(You’ll also be able to pick up on the subtleties of their pricing schemes and promotions. They act like there are huge deals and only short times to act on them, but that shit’s always posted, so it’s clearly wrong.)

Yeah, I guess it makes sense to browse around ahead of time to see what's available, what qualifies as reasonable and warranting its price tag, and what to absolutely look out for.
Also, if anyone is reading still, where should I be looking? Craigslist, Kijiji and the local paper? Are those my best bets?

Yes. Craigslist is easy, but some people still only list in the paper, which less people are going to read (less competition for the place).
You definitely want to start looking as early as possible. Most places list when they will be available for move in. You might be able to get a place that's gonna be a vacant a month or less before you move in. Never hurts to try.

Great. Thank you! It just seems like most places are advertising move-in dates of September and October of this year, or thereabouts--it's nice there are so many availabilities, but they're all gonna be snatched up come April!! Or maybe I don't really understand how it all works still. :s
