Topic: Are the London riots symptomatic of increasing apathy worldwide?

Most of the people rioting in London don't actually care about whatever issue started it (the killing of a civilian by a police officer?), and are just taking part because they see an opportunity to vent some aggression, steal some stuff, or they just no longer give a fuck about what they do or who they hurt.
Makes me wonder if this kind of unrest is more deeply rooted. These riots started in London but have already spread to 3 other cities in the UK.
I reckon people are becoming more apathetic, selfish and uncaring in general, probably because of the increasing stresses of modern society... and that this might be the start of a gradual plunge into world-wide anarchy. The western world has been peaceful for all of OUR lives, but do we take this for granted? As society as a whole becomes more angry, frustrated, stressed, poor, apathetic etc, can we expect more riots and unrest in traditionally peaceful countries?
