I consider myself an atheist, and I respect that Stephen Hawking is an atheist, but I find his claims that his theories disprove the existence of god to be a bit audacious. Just put the science out there and let other people philosophize about it however they please.

Problem is people think it has to be Yahweh or no god. That god can't just have created a universe of chaos and let everything happen on its own to see what would happen.

He explicitly states that people should be free to believe whatever they please. He is just offering his opinion on the matter, and he is well within his rights to do so.

There is nothing logically inconsistent with that notion, though, so it is possible, metaphysically speaking. Deists would argue that what you are describing is exactly what happened.
