I used to think it was an air pressure problem, but no, it was was my cochlea getting fucked

well only so much as sound is pressure waves, but no this is a response that I get from any extended period of loud sound and I recognise this now, but as a kid I had no idea

I wear soft foam earplugs and they prevent the problem

Yeah, fair, most sound related things are at least vaguely pressure related.
