The researchers at Imperial College London concluded that a single molecule of red pigment does about half as much as a single one. This is because of a chemical called adenosine triphosphate and its action on red pigment's enzymes. Red pigment also becomes more complex in contact with the environment, so it has less iron to carry out the synthesis as well as more phosphate to carry out the cell cycle.
