The system is designed to be exploited by the wealthy. I have inherited very meager amounts of funds in a trust and was taught by a Ceritified Public Accountant and my accounting college the details of all tax avoidance and small business strategies to help you pay the least amount of taxes. It's all entirely legal, and has been set up with powerful people to be useful to them and their peers.
I am only taxed on the equivalent income of just under half the median US household income. I pay the full amount, as if that was my income, yet, in truth, I earn much more than that and do not have to pay any tax on a lot of my income.
I assuage my guilt with donations to local charities for addict services and metal illness causes

I pay whatever taxes I get withheld. I always get close to 2k back. Im not sure what I need to change to fix that. I kind of like getting the money in feb. I deduct my school and shit, but if I don't get a form in the mail I don't really do anything. .

Adjust the witholdings on your W2. It sounds like your income has been pretty steady, so you can easily estimate an accurate dollar amount that should be witheld. The government doesn't even pay you interest on that money! ;)

Id have to stay two hours until HR opens. I really don't feel like it and I really don't want to owe any money. It's a hassle and I like getting the refund. The interest is minimal. I'm not a penny pincher, so it makes little difference to me.
