China aligned with Russia (or rather Russia aligned with China) long ago. Not that they will get involved in this Ukrainian skirmish. They'll provide 'moral' and economic support for Russia but no fucking way are they wading into this in any other way. They'll ultimately come out as winners.

I was pretty skeptical about February 23rd after the invasion was supposed to have happened on the 16th. I'm still not sure if this is all out war and this will end with the Russian flag flying in Kiev and the Zelensky government arrested, or if this is just finishing the annexation of the eastern separatist areas.

Putin said he wants the unilateral surrender, disarmament, and "de-nazification" (lol) of the Ukranian government. Not sure he's gonna settle for two rinky-dink eastern provinces. Most likely he will take Kiev, kill or capture the current government, and install some goons in their place. Maybe the new leader is someone from these noble People's Republics in the east, or maybe it's just some other guy who will swear fealty to the Russian government. The specifics are kinda irrelevant at this point.

I find the 'de-Nazification' reasoning amusing as a reason for total war, but Ukraine do literally have an openly neo-Nazi battalion, the Azov Battalion, as part of the official Ukrainian National Guard.

The Azov battalion is like 1000 people at most. I doubt there is a military in the world that doesn't have 1000 neo-nazis in it. Plus if they're all in one batallion you can just send them out on the worst missions and they either succeed or all die. It's a win-win.

Does it matter? I can't talk to the numbers because I don't know about that, but even at 1,000, if the US military had a KKK Battalion™ albeit with meagre numbers like those, would that be allowable? It's officially accepted as part of Ukraine's defence forces.
When Russia says Ukraine is allowing Nazi elements into their government and military, officially, they aren't wrong.
Ukraine is happy to allow Nazis in their ranks, quite openly. It's allowed Russia such a huge PR win, it's almost as if their country is run by a comedian!

Oh yeah I'm not saying it's good. It's very dumb and leads to criticisms that shouldn't exist. But also the idea that neo-nazis have substantial influence in the military or government, especially to such a degree that Russia must swoop in and save the country, is just propaganda.
