...to avoid losing the election via mail in ballots. No one seems to care.

Postal service is slow, so what do you do? Post things for longer?

That's not how it works. The post office is funded by postage. The postage for the mail-in ballots will pay for the post office to deliver them. You can't "defund" the post office unless you stop people from mailing stuff.

Fuckin retard ?

There's less mail during the Chinese Flu pandemic, so it makes sense they would take surplus machinery temporarily offline.

Amazon is defunding the Post Office worse than Trump ever dreamed of, with the loss-making rates they give Amazon for package delivery.

The post office was profitable until they were forced to pre-pay pensions for all of their employees and all the employees they will have in the next 70 years lol! No other government agency has to do that

Meta !Sober//iZs replied with this 5 years ago, 4 minutes later, 1 hour after the original post[^] [v] #1,153,701

@previous (Coil E. Leafeon !QnI1ArmPmY)
Probably for the best, as no one is going to be mailing shit in 70 years meaning the pensions won't otherwise get paid. Amazon is building up their own delivery service so even they won't need them anymore soon.

Either way though, this pension funding thing way predates Trump and Republican and Democratic congresses (and a Democratic president) have had a long time to change it.

While technically profitable, it was very clearly trending downwards and barely profitable at the time of the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act in 2006.

@1,153,713 (Coil E. Leafeon !QnI1ArmPmY)
That's on $72.6 billion in revenue. That's a 1.3% profit margin. Barely profitable. Also look at the trend from 2003-2006, where do you think USPS profitability was going, pre-PAEA?

PAEA was passed by unanimous consent in the Senate so Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton all voted for it as Senators ?

Not much, but I was researching PAEA and found it funny. It seems to have been pretty uncontroversial at the time of its passing. If, in 2006, it was seen as this "HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS BUSH IS TRYING TO DESTROY THE POST OFFICE!!!11!!1!" it would have gotten a lot more pushback I think.

Yeah it's one of those laws that passes with bipartisan consensus because people aren't thinking a lot but ends up being catastrophic. Not the first or the last one of this kind.

Yeah, I have no strong feelings one way or the other on that. I think a privatised Royal Mail that has to provide a universal service, UK-wide (rural communities and all), isn't necessarily terrible. Deutsche Post seem to do well.

So it'll do! Until we radically restructure society of course. ☭☭☭
