Assalamu alaykum!
Every generation has different problems and tests to deal with. Among other things, I believe that Fah’sha (indecency, shamelessness) is one of the greatest struggles for us, the Muslim youth.
I personally went the wrong way several times in the summer, because I had to lower my gaze so much, to the extent that I didn’t really see where I was going ?
Furthermore, pornography has never been so accessible, acceptable and widely spread as today.
Knowing this, it is extremely important to know how to protect yourself against the wide spread indecency, and I truly believe that Surah An Nas, teaches us everything we need to know.
For those addicted to pornography, or those who simply can’t lower their gaze, learn the teachings of Surah an Nas, and act upon them.
Here is a quick summary of the teachings, but I highly recommend to further your knowledge.
1. The word Nas (humanity) comes from the root word Nassyan, meaning forgetfulness. This is important to know for the next points.
2. Iblis is “Al Waswas”. While normally translated as the whisperer, this has negative and repetitious connotation, making a better translation: The one who negatively, repetitively and obsessively Whispers. The whole Musta’adh Minhu (of what we seek protection of) in this Surah is about Waswasa
3. Iblis is Al Khanas, the one who constantly steps back.
According to a narration from ibn Abbas (RA), when you forget Allah, Shaytan does waswasa, and when you remember Allah, shaytan does Khanasa.
1. Shaytan has access to your chest, but not your heart. Yet Shaytan is constantly waiting for the opportunity to be invited into your heart.
When Shaytan has Access to your heart, he can make evil look so beautiful. We see people saying zina, drugs, homosexuality are actually beautiful. This might be a sign that shaytan has entered their heart.
On the other hand, those who constantly forbid shaytan from entering their heart, see how disgusting the haram actually is, and the deen becomes beautiful.
Remembrance in Allah, therefore means that shaytan has no access to you, while forgetting Allah, even for just a second, makes you a victim of the shaytans waswasa. Don’t forget, shaytan never stops. He is Al khanas, who constantly waits for you to forget allah for even just a second.
Lastly I want to talk about practically overcoming pornography and Masturbation:
1. Marriage is not a guarantee to stop, and it could impact your marriage deeply and negatively.
2. if you can, cut off all possible ties to pornography. On IPhone you can restrict yourself, on your computer use cold turkey.
Also if you can, cut off your internet at home. This forces you to go outside for the internet (e.g library, work, school, cafe etc.)
1. Do sports. If there were a drug, which can do everything that sport can do for you, it would be the best selling drug of all time.
Try to do sport in the beginning and the end of each day (e.g Biking, swimming, walking, jogging)
1. Know as much about it as you can. Inform yourself and teach others about it. Know that rewiring your brain is always painful, and push through the imagery in your head.
2. Take it easy. Willpower and discipline are like fuel tanks, do not deplete yourself by trying to take on too many habits. Shaytan loves it when you try to take on more than you can handle, this makes you weak at the end of the day and prone to waswas.
3. Make constant du’a about everything. Talk to Allah constantly and make Allah a constant companion throughout the day. Minimize the chances for shaytan to perform his waswas. Before going to sleep, talk to Allah one last time, about anything. Transcend into sleep with the remembrance of Allah, and wake up with the remembrance of Allah. Constantly recite “a’udhu billahi, min al shaytani Rajeem”. (I seek protection in Allah from the accursed shaytan)
4. Know that in the beginning, boredom and loneliness are very lethal. While both boredom and loneliness CAN BE very beneficial (creative solitude), when it comes to pornography addiction, it is very lethal. It mostly leads to relapsing, so surround yourself with people, and try to find new and better past time activities (sports as mentioned before, programming, writing, reading, just google “hobby list” and try a few)
5. Got to sleep early, and wake up early. There is deep wisdom behind the prayer times and going to sleep shortly after Ishaa and waking up for fajr is deeply beneficial for your recovery InshAllah.
Don’t forget that it was Fah’shah, that the Prophet (PBUH) warned us about specifically. He didn’t worn us about any leaders, or attacks (e.g. crusades), but he (PBUH) did very specifically mention Fah’shah several times.
It is not an easy task to overcome indecency, even our parents ( Adam (AS) and Hawa) were affected by it.
May Allah grant you a smooth and successful recovery, and may Allah put Barakah in it. Amin
