dust and hair and shit will collect in the area. if you are lucky, you'll be able to disassemble the laptop without breaking it, and be able to use compressed air to blow the dust out.

This. Disassembling laptops is actually not hard at all. I always end up with like three screws left over when I put it back together but it never causes any problems though.

Right? And yet each time you disassemble, you end up with another screw, or a few. Where are they coming from? and how the fuck is it functioning without them? I swear I've got 20-odd screws from a single laptop.

It just amazes me how much they're over-designed. Each one of those screws costs time and assembly labor to install. You'd think they'd have an engineer sit down and work out just how many screws are truly needed to keep the laptop in one piece for 3-5 years (what I think a reasonable design life for such a device would be) and then put that many in.
Either the laptop manufacturers are retarded or they know about this problem and put in twice as many screws as are actually needed for exactly this reason ?

Perhaps you are a far better engineer than the engineers that built it? ?

It seriously does make me wonder. I mean, obviously individual components have individual attachment points for screws - I feel like during the final laptop assembly, they just screw in each hole and disregard the necessity of using every single screw hole. Anybody who's put a PC together knows you don't need to use every screw hole. Laptop manufacturers seem late to this understanding.
