I'm not sure which part of the 1950s you're thinking of. There was the Korean War, high unemployment, currency devaluation, and the quiz show scandals. Eisenhower was an unpopular peacetime President by the end of his term.
You may be thinking of a very brief period after Kennedy was elected.
