Topic: Is the Latino community really more diverse than the Black community?
Meta !Sober//iZs started this discussion 5 years ago#101,899
"Unlike the African American community, with notable exceptions, the Latino community is an incredibly diverse community with incredibly diverse attitudes about different things," Biden said. "You go to Florida, you find a very different attitude about immigration than you do in Arizona. So it's a very diverse community."

I get the feeling he is trying to say if youve met one [REDACTED] youve met them all but in an old man dog whistling kind of vernacular

It sounds like they're talking about...diversity of opinions??? That's the stupidest take on diversity I've seen in a while.

I can get the diversity of opinions thing. But he specifically said the Latino community has more diversity of opinion than the Black community. Which I don't get.
If you read the article, Biden's people say he was referring to the many different nationalities which fall under the "Latino" umbrella, eg Cubans, Guatemalans, Mexicans, etc. So Biden's example of Florida vs. Arizona would mean basically Mexicans and Cubans feel differently about immigration. Okay great. But Black people are not a monolith. They have Somalian Black people, Haitian Black people, Carribean Black people, African (from Africa) Black people, etc.
When I say "I'm not entirely sure what Biden is trying to say here", I'm not being cute, I just genuinely don't understand what point he was trying to make or how this would even work.

Yeah I get diversity of opinions, just you gotta specify. When you just say "diversity", people don't immediately think you're talking about opinions.

But let's assume Biden is correct here, that Latinos are more diverse in terms of opinion than Blacks: what would make Latinos have more diversity of opinion than Black people? Like what's the causal mechanism at work here?
Culture is one possible explanation. Maybe Cuban culture is different from Mexican culture and this leads to difference in opinions between the two groups which is significant and consistent (eg as a politician, you know Cuban voters will support policy X and Mexican voters will favor policy Y).
But would this not also work in the different Black cultures? Would not Haitian Black people have different opinions from Somali Black people, and both are different from African-American Black people? Or do Black people just dial into some pan-African worldwide hive mind to ensure opinion consistency????
I really don't understand how, or why, this would work.

I thought "if you don't like me you aint black" was a bit over the top.

Biden thinks Black people are NPCs ?

If i were his campaign I would cancel every interview and just lock him in his basement every day from now until election day. He should only be allowed to speak when reading prepared remarks. Hes famous for saying dumb shit. He just needs to not do that for like 3 months. How hard can that be??

I dont think he's senile quite yet but he's trending there. The only reason that probably won't matter is he's running against Trump, who is somehow even more far gone.

Lmao and now mysteriously he has chosen his VP candidate allegedly. What a transparent and lame attempt to shift the narrative. It will almost certainly work too tbh, though tomorrow Trump will say something dumb like before he was president, no one in America knew what oxygen was, but ever since he became president he created oxygen like you wouldn't believe, and now everyone is breathing it. And people will move on to that instead.

Why so much secrecy is what I wonder. Like if he floated candidates publicly, if he went out there and said "I'm considering candidates X, Y, and Z for VP" he could get feedback and thus choose a better running mate.
